Horseflies and other pests

Just wondering whether anyone has any good coping strategies for avoiding the worst of the winged pests that are so prevalent at this time of year. I was out last night and got bitten and harassed to the point of distraction. There's nothing worse when standing over a 6 footer than having a cloud of flies buzzing round your head and landing on you.

    Deet?

Never heard of it. Is that the product name or the active ingredient that is found in many creams/sprays? I have never found insect repellents to be particularly effective that contain Citronella etc.

    From HowStuffWorks though:

DEET is not without controversy or side effects. In fact, the chemical that you slather on your skin at backyard picnics can actually melt plastic. How does that make you feel?

+1 for DEET. It's not the product name but the active ingredient. I would rather lather myself in "melt plastic" than be an insect magnet.

I've spent all my life fishing rivers and lakes around the country and have been bitten by just about everything. I've tried almost every insect replellant there is, and in my opinion the only one that really works is Deet. I always keep some in the bag. Citronella is a waste of time.

Don't apply it to broken skin or get it in your eyes and you'll be grand.

As for the plastic melting qualities - do a quick Google search and see all the things Coca Cola will dissolve!

Lots of chemicals can melt plastic, the acid in vinegar for example, yet you eat that.
Insects carry diseases...how do they make you feel?

I suffer from those bloody things, but i have found that a face cloth soaked in water as hot as you can take, it works wonders elevating the pain.
