Driving Tester - Pulled handbrake?

My other half was doing her driving test, and very early in the test they were coming up to a 2 lane junction with a right turn at a yellow box. There were a few cars in front taking the turn so traffic was still moving slowly.

On approach the tester pulled the handbrake as he felt she wasn't going to stop/react in time? Never said another word to her and test continued as normal without issue.

Have never heard of a tester intervening like this before, from the sounds of it there was plenty of time left to brake but the tester did not have confidence in the driver. Just wondering is this normal? Obviously a shock to my gf when someone pulls up the handbrake on you when you're crawling along in traffic.

Did she fail, if so, on what?

Yeah it was a fail, first time I've seen the new format of fail sheet. Just had Turn Left, Reaction, Footbrake circled

Driving test or not, I would have pulled the car over and politely but firmly asked him to get out. One of the most stupid things that you can do in car, especially when the driver is not expecting it.

I would say your girlfriend is embellishing the story.

My best guess is that she was reversing into the car behind/rolling into the car above and she didn't have the footbrake down. They tend to be very picky on stopping distances.

When i done my test 5 years ago, the tester pulled up the handbrake on me. A car pulled out infront of me on a roundabout and he said i wasnt gong to stop in time!

Tester wouldn't have acted without reason I'd suggest.

The tester didn't do it for the craic. I'd wager something happened that was deemed dangerous and he/she decided to intervene. Maybe your OH was going a tad too fast, looking in wrong direction etc

Pulling a handbrake is a last resort for a tester/instructor and comes a little step ahead of bracing for impact. I reckon it must have been a serious enough booboo.
