Hi there I am looking to buy a car in a few months once I pass my test. I'd like it to essentially be the cheapest possible upkeeper. I will be a 25 yr old male when buying it. I heard that 2008 or newer models get reduced tax and that a Fiesta would be good for high MPG, low maintainence and costs, and low insurance. Is this correct or are there other cars I should be looking into purchasing? Thanks for any advice

EDIT: Doesnt need to be 4 door, 4 seater, large boot etc. budget would be 5-8k

What sort of driving are you going to be doing?

Probably light driving 90% of the time to work (30mins Dublin traffic), 10% of the time going from Dublin to Athlone. Does that help? It would be nice if it was a car that depreciates slower than others too, not sure how that works though!

Yaris, Clio, Fiesta. They are all cheap to run. The Fiesta or Clio would be better for longer drives and more comfortable then the Yaris.

The Yaris is only a 1.0(vs a 1.2 for the others) and would have better resale value(but also cost more to buy).

the cheap tax also applies to cc based cars if you have a small engine, say up to 1.5L, the cheapest car will be one with cheap cc rate and virtually no depreciation left, also one that you can buy outright without credit...

I would be buying outright without credit yes. Are you saying there would be other options than the 3 above for cheap cost, highly reliable, low upkeep and low depreciation?

The above are good suggestions. A Kuala ceed was mentioned on another thread recently. Something with cruise control for trip to Athlone would be handy...
