    Hi,

Does anyone know how to contact facebook to get them to delete your own facebook account? I have a vague recollection of some Austrian taking them to court to get a copy of all the information they held on him on privacy grounds. Was he not successful ? Should there not be some way of contacting them ?

    Thanks,

    Usjes.

You can download a copy of your data from the settings page.

You can deactivate your account on the security page. I'm not sure if that completely deletes the account, but it's a start :)

Yes, its ironic, it seems there may be plenty of things you can do to solve many problems once you are logged in. The problems I am having though are with actually logging in, and it has pissed me off to such an extent that I would rather just delete the account and have nothing further to do with Facebook. But unless you are logged in it seems there is no way of contacting them.

Interesting link, but let me re-iterate, the fact that I cant log in is the thing that has pissed me off so much and if you read the full text of this link you will notice the following:

Then, if you'd like your account permanently deleted with no option for recovery, log into your account and let us know.

When I log in (I have the correct password) I am greeted with the:
Please Verify Your Identity page which will apparently only accept a mobile phone number as proof of identity. I do not own a mobile phone nor do I intend buying one simply to quit facebook.

So to summarize, I went on holidays, and like a crazy f*cking stalker facebook starts annoying me because I'm doing something different. Then they say the only way I can have nothing further to do with them is if I give them my mobile phone number which offers them another avenue to stalk me now that I have officially decided to sever their original access to me. Sure I'll stop contacting you but first give me your mobile number cos I dont have it already.

At this stage its looking like I should contact the Gardaí and report Facebook as a stalker.

Right, I didn't understand you couldn't log in.
Hmm, I usually just identify pics of friends. That option isn't there for you?

So your issue is that FB only want a phone number and you don't have one?
Can you get a friend's number? Once you delete your account the connection to that number should be broken.

No, whilest not normally a member of the tinfoil-hat brigade this is actually very creepy. Like everyone nowadays I have any number of online accounts which will occasionally want to re-verify my identity if I log in from abroad or need to mail me a new password if I forget it. The process is very simple they send a mail to the address that I signed up with. Facebook for some bizzare reason is the only site I have ever encountered for whom this is not enough and in fact it suggests that they are flat out lying when they say they are just trying to verify my identity. It seems for some reason they just really want to know my phone number and as it happens I dont own a phone. And, after this experience, I sure as hell wont be sharing the number with Facebook if I do ever decide to get one.
Basically they are trying to extort private information out of me by holding my existing data hostage. I have my facebook password and I have the email address and password that I used to register for facebook yet they will not interact with me in any way unless I divulge to them further private information which they dont already know and therefore could not possibly be of any use for them in verifying who I am, but would obviously be useful for future stalking. As I say very creepy.

As to why they dont ask me to identify friends, I think this is not an option on my account because I dont actually have any friends (on facebook). But I cant remember for sure and I cant log in to check.

OP, spend just a micro-second thinking about this: How do they know it's you, and not someone else trying get your account deleted?

Try spedning another micro-second. I have not only my facebook password but also the credentials for the email address used to register the account. These details are sufficient for EVERY OTHER ONLINE ACCOUNT I HAVE EVER USED. Further, these are the only details that facebook have ever had about me so how PRECISELY will giving them NEW private information about me help them verify my identity. If I were some random account hijacker up to mischief I could give them my mobile number and they would allow me to wreak as much havoc as I saw fit. As I have already explained in detail giving them a moblie number is of NO USE in verifying my identity. And as I have further explained, my initial intention was merely to check the status of my account but the appaling level of service from facebook pissed me off to such an extent that I decided I would rather delete the account. Perhaps you should spend more time actually reading posts before posting useless responses.

So log in, remove all the content, change the name to "Joe Bloggs", deactivate the account and never think about it again.

OP has stated he can't log in fully because he gets to a page where FB demands a phone number before he is let into his page.
There has to be a way around that, is there not a help link on the page or something?

Just reading this again in full.

I would imagine that FB is asking for a phone number because the OP tried to log in from an unusual location. I would also imagine that the OP did give them a number (any number) in the past, and FB are looking to have this same number (which the OP cannot remember) quoted to them.

What's more .. a Facebook account with no friends has no value. There is no need for the OP to delete it, just never log in again.

(And you know, I am kinda suspicious that the OP is trolling anyway ... no mobile phone? no friends? yeah, right ...)
