Anyone ever purchased a bike from www.bikesdirect.com in the US? They seem to be a clearing house for prior year models at huge discounts.

Something like this seems a serious bargain http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/motobecane/lechamp_cf_storm30.htm

I guess the big challenge is shipping cost to Dublin (assuming you have a contact in the US who will receive and ship it on to Dublin for you) and import tax?

If anyone here has gone this route I'd appreciate your thoughts.

    Ben

Just be aware of how excise duty is calculated. You pay duty on the enitre cost of getting the bike to you, including shipping and insurance. You then pay VAT on top of the entire cost so far (including excise duty). Assuming a duty of 10% (dunno if that's accurate) and a original cost of €800 plus €100 shipping, you'll pay €90 excise duty on the €900 total and then €228 VAT on the €990 for a total of €1218

Thanks cdaly. I think the transport and import/vat costs and the fact I can take advantage of the bike to work scheme here means I'm better off going local plus my local shop will be there for support and servicing etc which I wouldn't be renowned for!!

Importing could be a good solution if the bike was very specialised or the brand couldn't be gotten here and you were fairly handy on the servicing side yourself.

It was worth a look but I think I'll stick with my LBS this time.
