Expensive items in the Steam Marketplace

With all the horsecard trading and selling this year, I've noticed some items with incredible pricetags (€150-plus). They're usually bits and pieces for DOTA2 or TF2 and if you go into the history it'll say how many were sold at what price and on what date.

But my questions is, are they really? Are there actually people out there paying those prices for game items like that? And if so, why? Is it all some scam or what is it?

And more importantly, if it's legit, where can I get the money to do that? :p

Some people have a lot of excess cash, like to play games and really enjoy having decorations on their character that no one else does. Wouldn't ever touch anything like that myself.

Recently, a skin for a gun in counterstrike that was quite expensive was removed due to copyright infringement, it cost a lot to buy and was removed from the inventories of those who had already bought it. To make up for it Valve personally created a new skin for those people (which they can probably sell on for more). It's a pretty nuts business! ( link )

I sold a skin from CSGO for nearly 20 quid a while back. That was nearly 7 times what i paid for CSGO. It was nice to get paid for playing a game for once.:D

Obviously someone hoping for their lucky day? When you get an unmoderated forum like that, people tend to push their luck.

I suppose some people might treat such objects as investments too - it is possible to sell the likes of Unusual items from TF2 outside of the Steam market for cash. Imagine getting 150-200 euro from a couple of polygons you found in a crate!
Friend invite me only if you're level 10+ steam or you know me! If you do not meet these requirements I will deny. If you don't meet the requirements and want to add me really bad comment on my profile asking if you can.
This is how they make the market work I suppose. People like this who treat it as some sort of exclusive club. That's a bit sad really.

Sometimes I open the Weapon Crates from CS:GO. I found a 'Red' quality Knife in one of those crates and put it up for 40 euro on the marketplace as that was the going price. Within an hour I was contacted by someone and they asked would I sell it to them for 30 euro? I agreed and enjoyed my 30 euro!

As mentioned above, some people have a lot of money to throw around and if this is their hobby so be it. I believe gaming companies call these people 'whales' and celebrate the fact when they get their first 'whale'. FIFA's card game is another known 'whale' attraction.

I think part of it is jealousy on my part. I want to either have the money to spend on stuff like that OR have the stuff to sell at those prices :P

But yeah, I can see how if it's your hobby and you can afford it then why not?

I just always wondered if it was a case of people putting up items at those prices to enable a scam where the buyers had been hacked and weren't genuinely buying them.
