I was using the self service check out in Marks and Sparks earlier and the person before me left notes behind them and obviously forgot to collect all their change. My notes came out after that and I took all so ended up €10 up but now I feel so so bad because I know it was wrong. I can't bring it back so was thinking if I gave to a charity this will be ok? I know it sounds silly but can't help it

The original owner was never going to be found anyway, so don't beat yourself up over it. Giving it to a charity isn't necessary, IMO, but would be a nice thing to do, and very kind of you :)

Chances are the person who left the money behind has given up all chances of getting it back anyway, so even if you bring the money back, there's probably only a skin chance it'll get reunited with its rightful owner unfortunately

If it were me that lost the money, I'd like to think that it went to somebody who needed it ... wouldn't have to be a charity. Rather than just give it to charity, you could use it to do something nice for somebody out for multiple people. You could pay somebody's bus fare with past of it, I'm sure that would definitely make somebody's Friday ! Out you could use it to buy a homeless person some food. I'm not saying you have to take them to a restaurant (you've only got a tenner after all !!) But you could ask one of them what they'd like, or buy them a McD's/BK/takeaway. Last time I bought a cup of tea for a homeless man he had a smile like a Cheshire cat, no kidding !! It's a bit more work than just giving to charity, but you'll know the money was spent well, and you'll definitely feel good about yourself

Anyway, that's just my opinion, Hope it helps you out

Just enjoy your lucky day. Honestly, you're not a bad person, you essentially found a tenner that someone lost. Rather you than some knacker!

Thanks guys, I had planned to give to a homeless person but I swear when you want to see one you won't. A woman in our locality whose son I went to school with sadly lost her battle with cancer today so was thinking because of the day that's in it I will donate it to irish cancer society

Ah, it's a bit silly. the reality is, even if you handed it in to a staff member, it's going to end in someone else's pocket. Better yours. It's only a tenner, take a friend for coffee.

As for your plan to give it to a homeless person.. if you must donate it, give it to a homeless shelter. At least they won't spend it on booze or drugs.

OP during one of the first times I used the Tesco self service machines, I left a €5 note behind, as I forgot to collect my change! It was completely my fault and it wasn't until ages afterwards I realised (in the kind of way, didn't I put in X amount and what did I do with the change? oh shii.....) and just wrote it off as a lesson learned.

You're doing something good that matters with the money to you, don't worry about it. I hoped that whoever found that €5 I left behind did something nice for themselves, or that it made a difference somehow to them. It's often happened to me that I found a couple of quid or a fiver when I really needed it.
