Thermostat and Hot water control

    Hi There,

I`ve been looking to upgrade my current thermostat (salus RT500rf) with one that I can control via a app. I would also like to control my heating and hot water seperately.

My boiler is an Ariston Clas HE System 18/24/30. As a system boiler I assume that I can rule out a NEST as this only controls heating and from what I`ve read is more suitable for a combi boiler.

I have looked at the Salus IT500
    http://www.salus-tech.com/products/thermostat/it500/

Would this be suitable for my needs? Would I also have to upgrade my Hot water cylinder, my existing one is a copper cylinder which appears to have no controls that I can see.
Or are there any other alternatives out there that would be recommended?

I haven't come across any controlled with an app myself but a plumber friend fitted out.

He spent days before raving about it. After he fitted it for the client he wasn't as impressed. If I remember correctly the app was free & the timer very expensive. The part that annoyed him was it turned out the app was only free to download (or the first few months free) but after that you paid through the nose for the app.

I ddon't know if they are all like that or only a few or even if it was just that app. JJust thought I'd bring it to your attention so you can check it out yourself first.

    Cylinder Thermostat and Immersion Thermostat

My electricity bills seemed too high and I suspect that my immersion is to blame. The hot water gets very very hot.

I find I have a cylinder thermostat attached to the side of the copper cylinder and another thermostat control in the immersion heater.

    Do I need both?

Which one actually controls the water temperature?

    Thanks

You need both stats as they are completely desperate systems.
The stat for the immersion only controls the immersion.the one on the side of cylinder is controlling the heating side.
Which do you use the heating or immersion

I use the immersion mainly for hot water.

I use a gas boiler for central heating.

The immersion stat is adjustable. Also it would be advisable to have it controlled by a timer.

I think I understand the immersion thermostat.

I don't understand the function of the cylinder thermostat.

The cylinder stat controls the temp of the water in the cylinder when heating it using your gas boiler.

I think I'm beginning (slowly) to understand the function of the cylinder stat.

I can heat water for the taps in two ways: 1) immersion 2) gas boiler.

If necessary I could use both if I needed a lot of hot water in a hurry.

If the immersion is off, the cylinder stat regulates the cylinder water temperature.

I got a new gas boiler about 4 years ago. There was a valve with a lever that moved from side to side depending on what needed to be heated hot water/central heating/both. This was removed when the new boiler was installed.

I have just examined the system again and I now notice 2 cream coloured boxes 7 cm wide and 8 cm high attached to 2 pipes. There seems to be a 'slider' at the top of each. I don't know if the pipes are going through these boxes or not.

It is surprising how little the ordinary person understands about the plumbing/electrical systems in their houses.

Maybe I need to talk to my plumber.

    Apologies for being so long-winded.
