My laptop's keyboard key's don't correspond to the the symbols on them. For example when i press the hashtag key i get the Pound symbol. I've gone into control panel and tried to figure it out but am at a bit of a loss.

    Thanks for any help.

Keyboard or Regional settings in Control Panel or similar. Does the " key give a @ too?

Yeah sounds like Regional Settings. Do you have an "EN" down beside the time in the task bar (bottom right beside the time). Click that and set it to English UK.

Click here for a Microsoft video on how to change it in the control panel.

No the @ symbol I've found down on my inverted commas key. I did have EN but clicked display language bar and now it's gone!:o I'm not very good at this.
I checked and my location is set to Ireland beside the location tab is the keyboard and languages tab. When i click on the change keyboards tab i see that I have English UK selected.

So, the shift + number 2 gives an @ symbol instead of a "?

Click Start - Control Panel - Clock, Language and Region - Change Keyboards or other input methods - Click the "Change Keyboards" button.

There you will see a list of languages and what locale your current one is.

    Mine is English Ireland (Irish).

If you do not have it installed you can click "Add" and scroll to the desired locale, expand it and check the keyboard and click OK.

Let us know how you get on.

    Very odd!

The only thing I can think of is that it's a 'foreign' laptop. Did you purchase it in Ireland? Was it a second hand purchase? Just asking because there are different layouts (physical ones).

To view and double check key mapping you could try the on-screen keyboard.
