Maternity pay- spreading out 26weeks pay over 42 weeks

I will be going on paid maternity leave from August (26 weeks full pay by my employer). I then plan to take 16 weeks unpaid leave.
My question is will I be at any financial advantage/disadvantage by spreading out the pay evenly over 42 weeks? I guess, in theory, there should be no difference but maybe there's something I'm not factoring in. On my last maternity leave I tried to budget for the unpaid leave but wasn't disciplined enough to make it work.

If the 42 weeks are not all in the same tax year, then it may be better if you have it spread.

(Mmmm .. I'm not sure how legal it is to spread income over a period when it's not earned .. not giving advice either way, it's really an issue for your company.)
