Any brand suggestions, novice cyclist so not wanting to spend a fortune as once the ring is over I will prob just do long cycles of a max of 50k, so I'm not really serious however I don't want to break my tail bone on ROK ... On an 80k I had foam padded ones that did not help at all, and someone told me to go for gel??

    All help appreciated. Thanks

    Altura shorts.

Or just get a pair of bib shorts.

Check TK Maxx, they may have some on sake or look in the sale/clearance section on some online stores

Another vote for Altura progel shorts.
You should probably buy from a bike shop so you can try them on.
If you're in Dublin, Joe Daly's have a good few and so do Wheelworx (near Liffey valley).
Money well spent, they wash well too so will last you a while.

What is the consensus here, normal or bib shorts for a cycle like the ROK? I also need to upgrade my shorts for the ROK and wondering do I go bib this time.

Bib shorts are the consensus here. There's just not really any good reason for wearing normal shorts.

unless herself was to go to the toilet and it involves taking off wet clothes to get the bibs off! :-) bibs for my other half on dry days and padded shorts for longers spins where there is a chance of rain

Thanks to this thread I gave the credit card a bit of a hammering last night. Bought a couple of pairs of bibs.
Had to post it here as there's no "I should have left the credit card at work/in my girlfriends handbag" thread!

    Bib shorts all the way
I picked up some Altura Airstream shorts in my LBS last week and they are much better than my previous aldi.lidl ones.
They didn't have progel in my size put the chamois seemed even better in them
