    Here's one for ye

I was playing today in singles comp. I marked my ball on the putting green and then replaced it and walked away to read my putting line.

Apparently the ball moved but I didn't see it. My playing partner informed me that it moved and that I should replace it to its original spot.

I said I was fairly sure they changed the rules on this and you play the ball from the new position. He got a bit peeved at me questioning his knowledge of the rules but I stuck to my guns.

Was I correct in what I did?

    Thanks

You are correct, so long as you did not cause the ball to move. To the extreme of this rule, if the wind was to blow the ball into the hole... it counts and you've holed out.

My take would be he was right & you were wrong. The ball should have been replaced to it's original position with no penalty.
For playing the ball from an incorrect position, you would receive a 2 shot penalty in stroke play & loss of hole in match play.

But as it was determined that ball moved from it's original position, it should have been replaced to that position.

This is incorrect. If the OP did not cause the ball to move, it is played from it's new position with no penalty.

    Nope. Check out decision 18-1/12

    http://www.usga.org/Rule-Books/Rules-of-Golf/Decision-18/#d18-1-12
    18-1/12
Ball Replaced and at Rest Is Thereafter Moved by Wind

Q.A player replaces his ball on the putting green and the ball is at rest. Before the player addresses the ball, a sudden gust of wind blows the ball farther from the hole. The player plays the ball from its new position. Is that correct?

A.Yes. Wind is not an outside agency – see Definition of "Outside Agency." Accordingly, Rule 18-1 does not apply.

    Which rule are you applying?
    Sorry just read your post.

According to this 18-1, the ball must be replaced with no penalty.
Breach for this is still 2 shots for not replacing the ball.

Apologies, just read the bit about the wind not being an outside agency.

What would the ruling be if it was not the wind but the slope of the green?

It's the same scenario for the slope. (Again, provided the ball was replaced and was initially at rest) Not at home right now so not sure if the following link will work ...

Yes,However this rule was always the rule. There was no change. The only rule change on a ball moving was this one http://www.randa.org/en/Rules-and-Amateur-Status/Ball-Moving-after-Address.aspx

That's really interesting that if it rolled into the hole, it would be deemed as holes from his previous shot! Never would have thought that.

Well at the other end of the scale, it could roll off the green and down into a bunker. Now that would be a tester for one's patience!

That's more likely what would happen to me!

I hit my second shot to just off the green of the 2nd hole in Dunmurry on Saturday, severe enough downslope. As we were standing around waiting for one of the lads to hit his bunker shot out of the blue my ball took off back down the hill and stopped about 15 foot from where it originally was!!

There is nothing more annoying. Exact same thing happened me 2 years ago on the 10th hole in Wicklow. It's a fairly steep slope so it leaves a tricky up and down but not only did I not get it up and down, I walked off with a scratch after duffing my chip.

Thanks for all the replies guys - I think that clears it up

True, it would drive you nuts. Thankfully its only happened to me a few times over the years. I made double bogey where a possible par was on the cards thanks to a similar duffed chip

Apart from the OP being correct, why did he ask you to replace the ball if you hadn't seen it move?
And what are we talking here a dimple or a full revolution? Bit petty at our level it's not snooker.

If it moves it moves doesnt matter by how much.
