Argentina vs Nigeria Match Thread

Meanwhile, in Porto Alegre....the football continues.

Argentina need a performance here to develop some sort of momemtum, Higuain and Aguero got 3 out of 10 each in the local papers and the devoted are not content. Might see Dimechelis get a run out as Fernandez has not convinced at the back, Gago was horrible against Iran so Biglia has to be in contention. Palacio or Lavezzi are pushing Aguero / Higuain.

Can't keep relying on a few minutes of brilliance from Messi and the prize here is significant, avoiding France in the next round.

    Vamos Vamos Argentina.

Nigeria put a reasonable performance in against Bosnia, albiet referee assisted. They have pace up front which might rattle the Argentine defence, however if they play on the front foot I think it might actually suit Argentina who struggle against teams who sit back and make them work. Argentina are set up to counter quickly via Di Maria carrying the ball at pace out of mf or Gago (allegedly..) moving the ball on to the Messi and co.

2-0 for Argentina, am in downtown Buenos Aires at the minute and will be sneaking out of work to find a suitable place to watch.

I wish I was in BA; love that place... What's the risk here for Argentina - how badly can they afford to do and still win the group?

    It'll be fun today alright.

They need not to lose to avoid France. Nigeria drew against Iran and beat Bosnia & Herz.

Win or draw and they probably play Switzerland next round, lose and they play France.

I imagine France will want Argentina to win as much as the Argentinians

If Argentina and Iran both win 1-0 does it go down to a coin-toss?

Yup. Drawing of lots to decide who qualifies if records are identical.

That is absolutely insane, should go to a peno shoot out or something.

True, it's a very unfair way to decide things but the games could be hundreds of miles apart and international tournaments work off a pretty tight schedule. Wouldn't really be practical to have a standalone shootout or whatever. Lots are a necessary evil imo.

Penalty shootout between Nigeria and Iran? Their teams will be 2,500 km apart when the group matches finish today.

With one of the main competitors for the title of 'Best in the World' facing the possibility of being banned from the competition it's now looking like a two horse race. I'd fully expect Messi to step up and carry the pieces of deadwood like Aguero, and the crusty looking lad they brought on against Iran to victory, putting a bit of distance between himself and Clint before he plays again.

    2-0 Messitina.

Seems to be the same Argentine forward line. Would prefer to see Lavezzi on for Aguero. He would fit better into their system and give them some pace. With Messi playing in that hole no room for Aguero to play. If Nigeria keep it very tight in front of the box Messi might find it hard to score again. So many of his goals come through that central channel.

    Penalty shootout online through FIFA?

Have them both provisionally qualify for the second round and then when they show up have the shoot out as a prelude to the knockout game.

Or... simultaneous shoot-outs after the two games with the third choice goalie from each side on hand (it's not like he'd be needed at the actual game).
