Rent Tax Credit

I'm useless at keeping on top of my tax, but my housemate mentioned that we should be able to claim something back for the years that we've been renting together (the last 4 years or so).

Sure enough when I looked it up on the revenue site, there was a section about it. I rang up my local revenue office to enquire whether each of us had to apply separately or together. The lady on the other end told me that the scheme has been ceased since 2010; though the form that you download online clearly mentions values up to 2017.

Was I told a few fibs to get me off the phone, or are Revenue still advertising an obsolete tax credit scheme on their website?

You need to be renting before 7th December 2010 to claim the credit. The mention of 2017 is because the credit is being phased out over a number of years.

Cool. So say for example, I start renting October 2010, and stay in that place until February 2012. Does that mean I'm eligible to receive relief up until that date? Or is it more just that October to December?

you'll get it till 2017 as long as you are still renting and have adequate taxes to utilise it against

google Form Rent 1 -- it gives the rates on te back - ( you get 20% of the amount as a credit)
