Hi. I just have a few questions about a career in the Irish naval service.

Could someone go through the different ranks in the navy please.

Also if one joins the navy as a cadet are you guaranteed to to be an officer primarilyworking on the bridge.

What are thre salaries for the different ranks.

    What is the training like.

Is it very hard to get into a navy cadetship. What could I do to optimize my chances.

Thanks in advancwe for any replies

In all honesty if you don't know the basics by now your lack of interest to this point puts you at a disadvantage. And by basics I mean cadetships versus enlistment, executive versus engineering branch etc

Im not deliberately disparaging your interest, but initiative is a key trait of potential cadets and ratings so I would suggest a 10 minute google will tell you what you want to know, and also give you an idea what else you should know. Start with Military.ie ,defence.ie, PDFORRA, RACO etc

Thanks for your useless reply. I accept that some of the answers to my questions are on the internet such as pay and ranks but by asking what the training is like I wanted to get views from people who have experience of it. Since I have never been in the navy hence why I'm asking this question how do you expect me to know what training is like.

If you don't want to answer peoples questions then don't but don't be giving answers discouraging me from asking questions on a forum.

'' my lack of interest is a disadvantage.'' How do you know my interest and knowledge of the navy. Just because I don't know the pay ranks and what training is like doesn't mean I don't know about the naval service.

If you know the answers to some of the questions then why ask them here? Information on pay and ranks is purely objective and easily found. the first hit on google gives the info on ranks and pay you asked for.

If what you are really interested in is information on training then make that the focus of your question.

If you are serious about a navy cadetship you need to know that it is very difficult indeed to obtain. Much more diffilcult than the army bur probably less so than the air corp. Based purely on places available. You also need to know that a good attitude and maturity are very important. Your response to Larbre34's reasonable reply shows neither.

    I am being mature.

I didn't know that the pay and ranks were available before I first posted I found them after larbe34 posted.

If ye don't want to answer my question then ok. I'm only trying to get some info about the navy and not physiological advice about my maturity and attitude which I personally am not too concerned about to be honest.

Do you have a boat. OP? I hear they won't let you in if you don't have your own boat. You should hit the aul' googlie machine though. Just to be sure.

Also, I'm pretty sure (72%) that canoes don't count.

Rarely have truer words been written...

How do you imagine that you will come across to the interview board with an attitude, or rather lack of one, like that?

If you believe that your usage of the word Physiological in that sentence is correct, then you're not somebody the Naval Service needs as an officer candidate.

OP, if you haven't already, have a look at military.ie......(as @labre34 already suggested)

    http://www.military.ie/careers/naval-service/cadetships/

It's all there. Including the terms for the current intake of cadets.

BTW, in my experience, the people who go into the Naval Service as cadets tend to have a grá for the sea (certainly in the Operations Branch) that would exceed even Air Corps cadets' desire to fly (or Army cadets' desire to dig holes in the ground :) ) - so the salary tends to be incidental. Ain't no one getting rich in the PDF.

On appointment as a newly minted ensign you're salary will be €28,416 pa or about the same as what an Executive Officer gets in the Civil Service, without having to do the 2 years training, living away from home and getting constantly wet. You'll also qualify for the princely sum of €48 per day while at sea, as well as a few other allowances that are no doubt taxed to oblivion.

You also get to keep a proportion of any drugs, fish or other illegal contraband you seize as part of a boarding.*

If you haven't got some affection for the sea (and some practical experience of the sea such as a leisure sailor / yachtsman), you're starting very much from the back foot.

If you want to go in to the Engineering branch I'd reckon a good start would be to get an electrical or mechanical engineering degree.

*May not actually be the case for the Irish Naval Service

I didn't actually think the Irish Naval Service paid out prize money......

......although the US Navy paid a prize in 1947. And it was only formally discontinued in the RN in 1948.

I do like the idea though of Naval Service boarding parties being led by an officer with a cry of "For Ireland.....home.....and the prize....." or maybe "d'Éirinn....sa bhaile.....agus an duais" would sound better :D
