200 Motorway miles once a week

So I'm in need of another car. I'll be doing a 200 mile round trip once a week, approximately 180 of those miles will be on a Motorway. It'll just be me in the car, no need for buggies, kids bikes or anything else.

I would like a bit of power to make moving into and out of the overtaking lane safer and easier

    Must haves:
    Aircon
    Bluetooth
    Armrest
    Cruise control
    6 gears for M-way cruising

I'll consider most car makes, styles and shapes. Budget is approximately €7000

    Tax.
    How much will you pay?

What other driving will you be doing?

I've got an alfa gt in my head for some reason

Ten years in the UK was a tax luxury :) I kind of forgot about the robbery that occurs here in Ireland :( Erm, I don't know, have to come back on that.

I won't be driving it anywhere else. It will do 200 miles a week and will not move an inch other than that. We have a family car that all other driving will be done in.

Nice suggestions and some lovely motors there but I should have said in the OP that I'd like something at least 09 reg, preferably 10 or later. Also I'm thinking that diesel is out as I'd be doing a max of 10000-11000 Km a year.

If you aren't doing any city driving or short journeys, which you've basically said you aren't, then you could consider a diesel surely. In fact it would probably be better for your mpg to get one if the car will only be doing motorway miles.

Any 10 reg diesel for €7k won't be great

Ah sure I want it all ya know? :)

I don't like the thought of leaving a diesel sitting for a week without moving, every week :/ I did that before with an Audi and after about six months it developed issues. Anyone have similar experience where it didn't cause problems.

As for budget, I'm not looking for diesel so how far do you think 7k will go? It's 10 years since I bought a car in this country and I'm not familiar with the market at all.

Nice. Haven't owned an Alfa before but would have to ask why that particular one has had 3 owners in 4 years. :)

Given it's a 2009 petrol car that would not have been very desirable when everyone was buying diesel, the dealer could have been stuck with it and forced to register it back when it was brand new to try and shift it at a discount.

    BTW it's 5 years old. :)

Would it be possible to make the family car "the nice car"

What I mean is - if you just need something with 5 seats - you could consider something with the required level of comfort for your normal during the week type stuff???

It would be easier to get something a bit nicer though when high fuel costs are not going to be an issue?

It's a good idea but our daily driver is a 2L Nissan CashCow Qashqai :) It has heated leather seats, bluetooth, cruise control, folding electric mirrors, panoramic glass roof, armrest, halogen lamps etc so it's already very, very comfortable for transporting the family in and out of town and for school runs etc. I've driven it from East Anglia to Wales and arrived at my destination feeling relaxed and refreshed :)

At 150 bhp it's not exactly a powerhouse but it's not a bad mover either and it has certainly surprised a few of the 1.9/1.6TDI golf/A3/Passat brigade who think they are driving something akin to a Formula 1 car :)

I wouldn't mind a 1.9/1.6 Diesel myself as at least when you drop a gear or two you can get it into and out of a lane quickly enough but I know I'll be bitterly disappointed with it's response otherwise.
So I guess 'power' isn't so much an issue.

You guys are giving me something to think about :)
