Not a name I recognise so it peaked my interest.

Sweet baby jebus the Yanks have gone mad again looking to build a faux links course but this time they might have cracked it.
A public course that's Whistling Straights esq but looks more beautiful to my eye.

Here's some golf porn to whet the appetite.

$239 a round pubic course

Would get out here in a Tyrone GAA top.

    Cheaper than Pebble Beach. $445.

$239 is reasonable for a championship course during the high season.

Could be on the west coast of Ireland. Looks Super.

It does look fantastic doesn't it. But look at how lucky we are in Ireland course wise. For eg next years Irish open in Royal County Down in fairness Chambers bay wouldn't be in the same league.

Looks spectacular in fairness. But whats the deal with the golf trolleys in pic 1? Is there a reason for the huge wheels?

They're not huge wheels, they're just tiny golf bags! ;)

Lots of big walk golf courses have them. They lighten the load you are carrying

It doesn't play like a links, it is a links!, although a manufactured one.

For instance Castlemartyr was designed to be an inland links but it just doesn't have the constant gale to play like one.

    Is it windy there?

Looking at google maps it's situated at the side of a body of water (a sound I think), not the coastline so I'd guess you wouldn't have the traditional links windy conditions.

    Looks fantastic though.

Bah Washington state, hate those west coast opens. Bleary eyed for a week.
Apparently only one tree on the course!

Peter Uihlein won the U.S Amateur there.

Well when I called in there in early April the pro told me it was $595 plus cart for a round on Pebble Beach. I asked for a 'deal' and was told 'this is Pebble Beach sir'.

    That's $8.61 per shot for an 18 handicapper :D

How much were The Old Head charging at the top of the madness, did I hear a grand a 4 ball ?

€170 per skull a few weeks ago. No deals except for a GUI fourball @ €119/head IIRC.

The yanks are back and the courses are full.

We played at 4pm and the starter told us we were the first Irish on the course that day.

€170 is excessive, caddy friends have said if you ring up midweek and ask to get out at 5.30 or so you will more than likely be accommodated for €50 a pop! I suppose it's avoiding the hectic times

    You're right, it IS excessive.

Must say that I called a few times, asked for any and all deals that they might do, hung up on them when they wouldn't budge. Made no difference. Depends on how busy they are, I guess. The week I went seemd to be very crowded. That's probably why there were no deals.

I realise that not everyone would agree but the actual green fee they charge in Old head isn't relevant, to the price locally.
For example if I could I'd pay €1000 to play Augusta National.
You have to compare it to Augusta National or Pebble beach, as a golfing experience I think it's ahead of most other courses on the British Isles.
It's not in the same league in terms of difficulty or it doesn't have the magic that Royal County Down has but I can understand people paying 1k per 4 ball.

Agree with what your saying there, it is a unique experience that for golfing tourists visiting Ireland is a must see and a trip wouldn't be complete without experiencing the atlantic gale howling in on top of you on the 12th hole while your trying to stand straight to hit a drive.

But my point is that if you book at the right times then you can play for a better price than highlighted above.

My favorite on first glance is the 8th

Lots of wide open tee-shots, big hitters paradise.
Greens just appear as extensions of the fairways with some severe breaks.
So, who can bomb it & who can putt under pressure ????

Played it last year - savage price! (But I wasn't paying)

The 8th was a relatively straightforward par 5 - just long (athough I did double it after driving into the heavy stuff on the left).

I thought the 9th was the most interesting and fun to play - massive drop (5 stories according to the ranger), a sea of bunkers and an undulating green.

Someone asked about the big trollies earlier in the thread - the reason for this is that they will only allow buggies if you can provide a doctor's note and then it needs to be driven by one of the caddies provided.
I guess the reason for this is that there are too many places to drive a buggy somewhere where you could get hurt!
