I am looking to buy a car from a private seller. I just got the history check on it and found out, that the current owner is 2nd owner as stated by him. He has had the car for about 6 months even though he said about a year. What is weird to me though, the owner before the last one had the car taxed during the entire time but not nct'd from 2011 - until 2014. How could that be. The car looks in good enough condition for a 2005, but that reports makes me wonder why no nct on the car for 3 years :-/
    Any ideas or suggestions?

Yes, the current owner put it through in January and it's NCT'd until Feburary next year.

    What's the problem then?

Could have been any number of reasons, ask the seller. Bring some who's knowledgeable about cars or even a mechanic to inspect the car when you view it.

If the seller withholds any info or something seems off, walk away.

A lot of people see tax and NCT as optional extras. If the car is in good nick now, has a test and checks out then I wouldnt be overly concerned about a gap in NCT.

I've recently bought a car in Northern Ireland (the same might apply in the south).

It is taxed until the end of the year so the garage gave me the registration certificate and told me that "there's no panic to send it back because it's already taxed anyway".

Is it a similar story in the south where someone could drive the car for up to a year before actually registering it in their name?
