Thistle and nettles control

    I have a field that's overrun with thistles and nettles. Probably more weeds then grass. Anyway remember hearing the old saying
    Cut in may, back next day
    Cut in June, be back soon
    Cut in July, sure to die .....

    Anyway any one know, would a good topping at the start of July give me a good kill ? Or am I just wasting diesal. I'm in aeos scheme, so blanket spraying is out. Can do spot spraying but, on 10 acres, I'd be there until next Xmas !!!

    Surely by waiting till July all you will have done is allow them to flower, and go to seed so really only going to make it worse?

    topping in mid July will give good control of the thisles for this year


    think it's best to top and spot spray the nettle re growth

    No you wouldn't - be there until Christmas. I cleared 30 acres of thistles and nettles last year by spot spraying fields after cattle moved on - each time took either 1 or 2 knapsacks with Thistlex. The infestations were moderate.
