Mondeo (Mk3) flywheel conversion

I drive a 2005 Mondeo (2.0 TDCI) and I've noticed a nasty vibration recently when I release the clutch. I had to drop it in to my mechanic for it's service today so I asked him to take a look, and it seems like that the flywheel is on it's way out. It's a pain but given it's got 134k miles on the clock it's probably done quite well to last me this long from what I've read. He quoted me €800 all in to replace the clutch and fit a solid mass flywheel. Just wondering if there are any issues with switching from a DMF to an SMF? I've read some accounts of increased vibration but then the car is a little on the noisy side anyway!

He says that he generally recommends them and that I shouldn't notice a difference. It's got the 5-speed gearbox, in case that makes any difference. I'll have to decide one way or the other in the next few weeks-much as I'd like to go shopping for a new car with a wedding to pay for it won't be an option this year.

134k miles is good going from a DMF.

Why not just get another DMF fitted as it is likely to outlive your ownership anyway.

I had a similar issue with my x-type last year (same engine) and I stuck with the DMF. I felt that if the engine was designed for a DMF best to stick with it. A SMF *possibly* puts more strain on the drivetrain, and leads to wear and tear of other parts prematurely.

I got a LUK clutch and DMF kit from some UK car site and it was about €500 delivered and it was about another €400 to get it fitted. Very difficult job on the Jag, no idea about the Mondeo.
