Clubs Query

    Hi all,

Just a question on clubs. I have a 60 degree wedge and the next club is a PW. Seems like a bit of gap and I think I need something in between. I have only 12 clubs in the bag at the moment after ridding myself of a 5 wood that was never used.

    Clubs go as follows:

    Driver
    3 Wood
    3 iron - PW
    60 degree
    Putter

I don't think I need anything between 3 wood to 3 iron so maybe a wedge or 2? What do ye recommend?

    No SW?

No have always used the LW or cut down/shortened on the PW

    I had the same setup and bought a 52 and a 56
My PW is 48 so I now have 4* between each club

What degree loft is the PW, if 47 I'd probably recommend a 54 degree which would bridge the gap but if your PW is more like 45 degree like a lot of game improver sets then would probably go with a 52 degree.

I haven't a clue to be honest, the clubs are possibly 8 years old. Did the lofts change recently on most clubs to lower degrees? What do you mean game improver sets?

Well i wouldnt look at getting any gap wedges until you get a SW. Its one of the most used clubs in my bag. Anything from 70 yards in i usually take the SW unless I have to go over or under something.

Post the name and make you your irons it'll probably be online what your pw will be.

    My pw is 46 degrees and I have a 50 and 54 and 60

I like the gap wedge on the strong side because I play in a lot of wind I like to have more options in the 50-150 range

The irons are Titleist 804.os Forged. Just under 100 yards is the max i'd get out of the 60 degree, I could hit a PW 135 comfortably enough in good conditions so its a fair cut down to hit it 105 for example.

What make of Gap wedges would I need to be looking at? I have a Vokey 60degree but they seem deer enough, what other good brands could I look into that would be similar?

    I've a 48 deg PW and use a 52 & 58 as well.

Think i might get rid of the 58 for a 56 next time i'm changing wedges.

Seems like the PW is 46 Degree loft... It depends what shots you like to play, what courses you play etc as to which setup would suit best. 50/52 and 56, or a 52 and 58 and drop 60, etc.

Halpenny have Taylormade ATV wedges for €69 and the clevland wedges for the same price if you trade in any old crap wedge.
I go 90 for the 58, 105 for the 54, 120 for the Gw and 135 for the PW. To be honest the type of course you play on and how far you hit it off the tee make a difference. i like to hit full shots with my wedges so feel i need the 4 I'm also fairly long off the tee so find myself inside 140 yards on a lot of par 4's. If you find that you are not really using wedges for full shots then as long as you are happy out of the bunkers and around the green stick with what you have.

Here's the link to the specs of your irons

    http://www.titleist.com/golfclubs/irons/print_specs.asp?Filter=General&equipguid=0BF0C9DD-EBDD-412D-B0D8-C9346B0EE224

Unless your irons have had the lofts bent your pw is 46 degrees so if I were you I'd go with either of these options.
46-52-58 in this case you could bend you 60 to fit the gaps better.
    46-50-54-60

You had mentioned about the gap between your 3 wood and 3 iron. It is likely that there is a fairly big gap there alright. If you are happy with that gap you could get the two wedges in or if not you have other options.
    2 iron
    5 wood
    2 hybrid
None of these are wrong really it just depends on how you see the game. Tiger for example would regularly swap out his 2 iron and 5 wood where many other guys on tour don't even carry a 4 iron anymore, they're using hybrids.
I'm a better long iron player than fairway wood player so I'd put the 2 iron in plus I'd be a fairly strong swinger so I can get out of the 4 inch rough with an iron.

It's all player dependant really isn't it?

Thats brilliant, thanks for the help.

After seeing that info on the clubs i'd nearly take your first option and look for a 2 iron. Never took to rescue woods too much and i like using my long irons. The 3 Wood is Taylormade 17 degrees with HL but cant think of the exact model. Bought it 2 years ago i'd say.

A 52 degree wedge looks the best option, would bending the 60 to a 58 degree make much difference? Fairly fond of the club and would hate to go messing with really.

Bending the 60 wouldn't really be the end of the world either way again depending on the golfer. Your wedges would be just gapped a little bit better that's all.

It's funny how particular we can be about wedges, fellas can be more particular with them than putters. Most people have a yardage they want to hit with a stock swing with their wedges. Say 100-115-130.

    My yardage's are these
    46-135
    50-120
    54-105
    60-85
Those are "stock" swings, stock being personal to me I guess.

I'd also think you'd need to check your gap on the 3 wood to 3 iron. At 17 degrees it'd almost be a 5 wood loft. Just make sure of your gaps before you buy.

This is exactly my set-up, and a 52 slotted in perfectly.

Cheers thanks for the advice all. I'll take it into consideration before purchasing.

You need to get yourself a Gap Wedge and Sand Wedge.

    Gap Wedge 52 degree
    Sand Wedge 56 degree
