There did seem to be a lot more ads this summer than the last few years so I was fairly hopeful. Was getting despondent last week having heard nothing positive but all of a sudden letters and emails arrived and I've five interviews scheduled for this week. So hopefully something will come of at least one of those.

I always feel that when they advertise at the end of the school year I never really expect to have interviews until the State Exams are done although that doesn't stop me worrying and checking post/email obsessively.

Best of luck with the interviews I hope you get something. I'll continue being hopeful so!

Yeah tons of applications and no response . Not looking good . I'd be happy to even get an interview.

    Congrats bobsammy. That's fantastic !

Lets all remain hopeful!! As a matter of interest how many years experience does everyone have? I have five.

I have four years teaching Maths. Have always had work to date but yet to get the elusive 'own hours'

I have 2 full years english and history experience n correcting for two summers now. Can I just ask how many try to stay within the one county or area for their jobs over consecutive years? I enjoy pin balling around Ireland picking up Mat leaves but I know in time I must look closer to home for own hours

Ahaha- I'm feeling the same straight off getting my 4th rejection letter in the last week. Can't seem to get to interview stage and really don't know what I am doing wrong. I have two years experience (both maternity leaves @22hours) and have taught both my subjects to leaving cert higher level, hot 1.1 in my dip so I really don't know where it is all going wrong.

I interview well and have a good track record of getting offers from interviews but at the moment I can't even get an interview and can't think why I'm being discounted in short listing process ( lack of experience?)

Nqtfarmer my last job was 2 hours from home so I moved down the country but I'm anxious for something more local if possible as I'm getting married next year.

My subjects are English and History too!

Hang on in there. If you have at least two good subjects (if you don't, sort that out asap), keep knocking on doors (try and actually speak with principals/deputy principals) and something will come up. It really will. I was involved in lots of activities through GAA, music, hillwalking, photography and other clubs. Just meeting people and chatting. The more people I met the more connections I made and this was how I got important breaks along the way. One cultural habit which Irish people have is a tendency to keep talking to each other until we make a connection. That can be useful.

I'm also thinking more long term of a backup plan for teaching because I won't be able to keep the energy level which I need to teach classes up forever, and to that end aside from making connections I'm doing courses to give me qualifications to branch off into other careers after teaching. Even though I'm on full hours and in secure employment I definitely don't feel like I can rest on anything. The more doors you knock on, the more opportunities you become aware of. A hell of a lot of everything in my experience comes down to being in the right place at the right time more than having some nebulous "pull". There's a lot of truth in the 'You make your own luck' approach to life. Keep at it and things will work out for you.

Delighted with myself now! Just been offered 19 hours from the interview I did on Tuesday. My own hours in a school that's only open a few years so I am over the moon!

Congrats bobsammy! I hope I get lucky myself soon. Trying to figure out why some schools haven't replied either way. It's frustrating a I'm assuming the positions have been filled yet I have no rejection letter/email. Keep trying everyone!!

Applied for loads too, just getting a lot of 'you've been unsuccessful at this time'. It doesn't seem right after 7 yrs exp. I heard that one principal was only interviewing candidates with firsts.
Thankfully finally got news today that they have hours in the place I was last year.

Still waiting for an interview here too.

At least you have those hours inatissy. Will you keep on looking for better in the meantime?

Yeah def appreciating that I got hours now for next year. I like the school so I dont think I'll find anything better and always easier going back to where you know. Fingers crossed for you. Its just so tough out there and frustrating.

At this stage I'd very happy to go back to the schools that called me to sub . Still would be nice to have a shot at something more long term.

Have applied for a 9 or 10 jobs over the last few weeks, had interview last Friday after lunch, I presume if I was successful I would have heard by now?

Give it a few days yet. Tricky when it's on a Friday,

I'd assume you didn't get it, move on to the next one and then be pleasantly surprised if they ring you to offer it to you.

generally you'd know very quickly, by 1-2 days post after at most. We would ring people to make sure the #1 candidate hasn't gone elsewhere in the meantime because they think they didn't get it

Generally you would know on the same day or a day later. I can't believe how many schools haven't even written to say I was unsuccessful this summer. Very disappointing  Just no response!!

I can understand your frustration but you have a pile of 150 applications, there already is time pressure to get the shortlisting etc done. You should get a letter but sending out 120-130 letters, even with mail merge is still another 1-2 hours when the interview process is already trying the clock. Having said that, you should get one.

On the flip side, try calling people for interview and they don't turn up..........

I know it works both ways and everyone is under time pressure but a system of sending out 'Sorry but...' emails would be free and less time-consuming. I understand how it happens but I do think it is the height of bad manners. I always feel extra bad for not getting jobs in schools which send out nice letters though because I imagine them to be lovely places to work!

What's your backup plan, ahahah? If you're going to stay around Ireland could it be worth your while applying for a relevant course, or even a course which could give access to another profession? (deadlines for which are regularly around 1 July) You'd go out of your head sitting waiting for a reply.

If you're young and single, could now be the time to look abroad? I did the ACELS CELT tefl years ago as one of my backup plans to allow me to do that.

When I was in your position I didn't expect a reply because it would be too disheartening to be thinking about it. I sent an absolute slew of applications out. Then, when I was told I got a job (it was usually by phone and the same day, interestingly) it was a pleasant surprise. Have a few things up your sleeve, don't take any of these lack of responses personally, and focus on where you might make new opportunities for yourself. Usually everything settles down eventually and we all land on our feet. You'll be grand, in other words.

true but not everyone puts an email address down. I know its only a 1 minute here and there but time is tough when interviews are on the go. Also some ETBs don't allow schools send out the letters so its their head office could be to blame.
