    Hi Guys,

So long story short is, car has packed up and I am considering buying a bike and cycling the 10k each way.

I'm in Cork so the problem is I have severe hills both to and from work. The route I would be taking is down Dublin Hill and into Blackpool, then up Fairfield Avenue onto Kilmore Heights to Apple. Add to this that I haven't been on a bike in years!!!

So the question is - is it doable for a complete novice or am I mad, should I just replace the car?!

    TIA,
    Vickser.

Doable? Absolutely. It will be hard at first as those hills are killer but you will get used to it and be flying up hills after a while. The problem I would have is the weather. Its grand to go cycling to work on nice fine mornings but getting out of bed in winter, wet windy horrible mornings and you will be tempted to ring in sick.

So my advice is to get a bike and cycle as much as possible but have a car as a backup when the weather is dodgy.

If you start cycling now, by the time the weather turns, you'll be pissed off at the prospect of taking a car/public transport that you'll keep cycling anyway.

Crucial thing is don't buy a cheapo bike. Minimum would be the likes of the Carrera Subway from Halfords but there's better to be had under €500.

And you'll find there are only a handful of days in the year when the weather is bad enough to consider taking the car.

What about the frost up that way in the winter? Doesnt it get pretty bad around apple?

Thanks for the advice guys. So decision made - I'll take the plunge and get something decent through the BTW Scheme and get pedalling!! To Cona's point though - will pick up a cheap runabout for those miserable winter days and the frosty spells!!

If you want to completely replace the car, and all it's advantages, and taking the hills in cork in to consideration, thought about one of these???

Available on the bike to work scheme also. You can get the no electric version, but I am thinking of all those hills on the Northside.
