Question about speeding cameras

My question is - does anyone know the range in meters from which it detects?

When I was passing it today (as in almost level with it) 70 flashed up on the screen even though I was doing 45ish on a 60 road  Won't be happy if a speeding fine notice comes in the post!

What screen? Do you mean one of those signs that flashes up your speed on the side of the road? Thats not a speed camera...

Are these the signs that tell you your speed? If so that won't give you a speeding ticket.
With regards speed vans I've heard 200, but not sure if that was in feet or metres so I treat it as metres because the difference Is massive.

If you can see the van/camera you're done. AFAIK they use laser detection which has a range of up to 1 km.

If you were almost level then it was probably the car behind. .

I've never seen a speed trap that shows your speed, usually they're just 'slow down' signs rather than cameras.

Those "slow down" signs are also usually wildly inaccurate.

    70 kph = 45 mph (ish)

I haven't seen one yet, which would be inaccurate.
All those I've seen in Ireland were exactly accurate.

Any I've seem understate the speed vs what the car says I'm doing. Given that cars always overstate your actual speed I'd say they're pretty close.

    Exactly.

Those displays are always showing exact the same as my tachograph which was precisely calibrated. It also shows in line with GPS.
I believe then, that they show correct value.

Mayo County council must have stumped up for decent ones so! Any that I pass regularly don't really show the speed I'm going. Could be out by as much as 20kph.

If it was a garda using a laser tripod or hand-held then you could perhaps be done from that range but (I've read elsewhere) camera vans use radar which is aimed at about 20 degrees or so across the road; your speed and photo are only recorded when you are much closer.

The ones in Kilkenny city are pretty spot on too. They are permanent installations, perhaps mobile units are less accurate.
