The engine mainly. Despite what you might think its a Peugeot derived engine and has all sorts of issues....

We have the 2011 1.6d old model which the wife drives. Bought from new and now has 60k kms without any issue. I wouldn't hesitate in recommending one.

I should add that we maintain at 16k intervals but I think Ford recommend a longer interval. Provided the service history is up to scratch it should be reliable.

I know 2 people who had that engine fail. One was a Volvo and the other a focus. The turbos go without warning. Cost between €1500-€2000 to fix. Personally I'd avoid that engine.

I know of hundreds of cars with that engine which have given NO issues, and continue to run perfectly, as long as they are serviced on schedule.

It should be noted that that PSA engine was overhauled when the new model Focus was launched. While it is still relatively early days yet that overhauled engine has been in use for about 3 or 4 years now and there doesn't seem to be any major horror stories with it as of yet.

almost every other car and van on the road has the engine in question under the bonnet, even mazda, volvo and mini being clients of this engine,
just like every thing else, if it is treated correctly, with the correct grade of oils, there is know reason why it will fail, it is no worst than the 1.8tdci, and certainly lagged behind the disappointing vag bxe engine, in terms of reliability.
and sure we all know someone who knows someone who's engine has packed in,

Hi all thanks for all the responses is this engine the same as a 08 Volvo S40 and 09 Qasqhai as these are the two cars we have trading in the Nissan

I have the 2010 car with this engine and again not a problem.

Remember that the Focus is a big, big selling car all over Europe and the UK, so there are a lot of them out there, and the 1.6 diesel engine is probably the biggest selling engine in recent years. So although you do read and hear about the odd failure, is it any more of a percentage fail than any other engine?

Same as the VW/VAG 1.6 diesel engine too. I have read a few people saying its a terrible engine too. If you add that engine and the Ford Focus engine, you are talking about a mega number of sales, and would they be such big sellers if they had a high failure rate?

The Qaskhai has a Nissan engine iirc. The same engine is in the Juke and across most of the Renault range.

Rust, look for rust, might be early days for it yet, but nonetheless - especially around the suspension areas.

The S40 has the older version of that engine. The Qashqai is totally different and has a Renault diesel engine.

God you don't like the French? Why, I know plenty of folks with them and a pure pleasure to drive. I found just make sure its not a lemon, and not a 407 or 607 and generally you've a car that doesn't rust, has good paintwork, smooth and comfortable, and cheap to run and tax. What more could ya wont for the price of a Skoda or a Hyundai???

I have a 106 TuD5 and that engine is as tough as old boots. Fair enough the 1.6 HDI has been known to have its down points, but if ya get one that has been well looked after, serviced correctly, no re-occurring issues, and for a under-valued price, your in clover. My local mechanic has a Citroen van, with the 1.6 HDI and over 190,000 miles. You can hardly lump it in with the K-Series.

And lets not forget which company won Car of the Year 2014???
