Substitutions tactical and other

    Two questions .

Can you explain why a substitution would be made 2-5 mins after halftime ? Why not make the change at half time?

Why bring a player on with less than 10 mins to go if there's no injury, player needs a few mins to get to the pace of the game and then it's over. It also cheapens the international cap when players are given a run for 3 or 4 mins.

The first - I don't know, never made sense to me either

The second - fitness issues? Get the player coming on a bit more used to international rugby? If it is 9 or 10 minutes there's still enough time for it to be tactical, I don't think a blanket statement of "it takes a few minutes to get up to speed" is really true. Those really late subs in the 79th minute drive me feckin' nuts though.

The only reason i can think of for a sub just after half time is that the coaches want all the players in the dressing room to go over tactics and then let the sub warm up for a bit/get ready when the second half resumes.

With only a few mins to go it could be due to wanting to get a player off as he's tiring badly and could make a mistake cos he's bollocked.

The halftime chat then warmup is plausible. Still not sold on the last ten mins crap. They have gps data now which gives loads of info to those on the sidelines , if a player is so shagged that they have to take him off with ten 10mins to go then the mgmt have left that player on too long.

7-8 mins is no good IMO to get experience.

    "Right Leo...you're in for Paul"

"But Declan, it's the 79th minute..there's only seconds left"

"just get on the feckin pitch"

Just after half-time could be to allow a player see if they have recovered from an injury or allow the player come on get the tactical instructions and then warm up, or it could be cause the person coming off is better at something at the re-start.

The coming on with a couple of seconds to go can be to waste time, bring on instructions or to give as many players a cap as possible, it does cheapen the cap a bit, but caps aren't counted by the number of minutes played.

Keeping the same team from the first half to start the second half probably brings a bit of continuity into that half.

It may also be a merely man management thing, no one wants to get subbed at half time.

Last ten minutes is plenty of time to make an impact.

Don't the players get something like a €10,000 appearance fee for Ireland irrespective of how long they are on the pitch?

Don't understand a half time substitute unless there is an injury. Give someone 5-8 mins after half time and tell them thats all your giving them and ask them to knacker themselves in that time then bring on your sub

Sometimes if a game is won a player will be brought on for the last 10 to protect starters from picking up an unnecessary injury before the next game.

You can definitely gain some experience after the 70th minute, particularly if you're not overly experienced in international rugby. Any forward who takes part in a set piece is clearly going to be better off for it, or a back who has to defend from first phase will know better where they fit into the defensive lineup.

Obviously more time > less time but I definitely would agree that only a few minutes is useless.

I'd always assumed the last minute bench clearing was for appearance money / caps anyway.

one thing about the last 10 minute subs is breaking up the rhythm in the oppositions play. they start to put phases together put some one one slow down the game set defensively again ets...
