    Hi,

In August we are going to a campsite in La Palmyre. We are taking the ferry to Cherbourg and have a night for a stopover on the way to La Palmyre. We have young children so dont want to have to do too many hours driving when we get off the ferry in Cherbourg. Looking at the map Nantes appears a good point as it looks about half way on our journey. Would anyone know of a good hotel or park with mobile homes thats not far from the motor way and would be suitable for a nights stop over?

    Thanks,
    BB

do you really need to stop over? you would get to La Palmyre in about 4.5/5 hours driving, with a good stop off half way for toilet and food it should be a comfortable journey and do able in a single day.

last summer I did the journey from Roscoff to Sanites (close to La Palmyre) in 4.5hours - docked at 11am and arrived about half three, with one stop off for coffee and toilets .. travelling with a 1 year old and 4 year old.

Cherbourg to La Palmyre is around 7h. So a pit stop can be possible. :-)

If you want to make a stopover between those 2 places, you have a lot of opportunities:

    - Nantes (but you won't have a lot of things for kids)
    - The seaside (such as La Baule or St Nazaire)
    - Les châteaux de la Loire (Loire's Castles) between Angers and Tours, you have a lot of castles you can visit.

After it all depends of what you want to do for your stopover.

I have to agree its an easy drive and no need to stop over. From Google maps its about 5 1/2 hours and I have done it myself from roscoff for the last two years. When you get off the boat everybody will be mad for road and exited and you can easily do three hours or more to get to lunch time stop at a service station for a half hour or more and finish off the journey and be at La Playmre around 5pm.

But hey I don't know how your kids are like traveling, but the kids will be more than likely tired because they will be going to bed late on the boat running up and down the corridors etc and they will sleep off the first couple of hours.

Thanks guys. We have to stop over as our campsite reservation is for the day after we arrive in Cherbourg so we have one night where we need someplace to stay. Ill take a look into Les châteaux de la Loire, it sounds interesting

559 kms in 4.5 hours with a coffee stop? Presumably les Gendarmerie were looking the other way as you passed!

    ;)

actually ... where I was going was 533km and as per google maps it gives a travel time of 5h 2mins .. and 4h 49mins without traffic. The bulk of your journey is being done at 120-150kph and a 20min coffee stop.

I'm actually doing the same trip this weekend so I will post an actual time !!

For anyone doing it this year, we do this journey every year, kids are 3 and 5.

Basically have the dvd players in the car for the kids, their computer tablets, treats etc.

We stop at McDonalds after Nantes, let the kids play for 30 mins in the playground and head again.

Second stop is 1.5 hours from la palymre, another mcdonalds, ice cream and play area for the kids.

Usually get at campsite at 630pm.

Why is mcdonalds the only place to stop :(
