I also was and I was lucky enough to be in a position to get one. Test drove one up the north and that was the end of that obsession. Very dissapointed I that I didn't like it.

I've been thinking of buying one of these for some 2 up touring, it sounded ideal for what I wanted, long distance confort but still able to shift/be chucked about when I'm on my todd!?

What didn't you like about it?

I always felt the modern Z1000's were struggling in top gear & needed an extra gear, if you know what I mean

Engine was great and pulled smooth through all the gears. However the rider position when driving the bike felt all wrong. Sort of sitting on top of the bike is the best way I can describe it. It have me no confidence.

Also a major downfall is you cannot mount the panniers and top box at the same time.

Im also looking to change my sv1000s for something with more comfort and still be a bit of fun when i want.
Aesthetically the z1000sx is perfection imo.

I will organise a test drive and see what i think. I see lepla described it as almost sitting on top of the bike.
He is quite tall where as im a short arse so i will see what i think of it.

Its a sweet looking bike but by all accounts it not great for 2 up touring. Solo touring I would say its a beast....had a test booked in McCallans the last time the weekend BBQ was on but never made it up.

Very well stocked bike aswell with ABS and Traction control, and adjustable screen puts more expensive bikes to shame with the tech on the bike.

They're a bike that I could see myself owning from what I had read in magazines etc. seems to tick the boxes for what I'd be looking to upgrade too.
Good to hear a real world review from you Leppla, I must arrange a test drive at some stage.

For me it was the perfect bike on paper and it looks super IMHO. It's between sports bike and touring bike that ticks the boxes for so many of is as riders.

However on reality I found it two be trying to be a sports bike and also trying to be a touring bike and not getting either of them right at all.

I got prices back there on the standard and abs models and the offer to test ride the demo model.

I just need to check the calendar and then take a spin up for a test drive.

Yes, I was told by a lot of dealers that this is very common in recent years from manufactures, they purposely design the OEM boxes so you are unable to put all three on even if you want to. Apparently it is to do with sub frames cracking on bikes in the past. Such as busas. (However I was told by another source that this was due to lads, removing exhaust brackets on the busa and then fully loading it.)

Found this on another forum when doing my research on the s1000zx.

    Hi All

Just found this statement from Kawasaki re Luggage and the official line on a three box setup, makes interesting reading :

"We can confirm that a top box and pannier system is available as a genuine accessory from Kawasaki for the Z1000SX. However, due the way the mounting supports are designed for these two accessories, the top box cannot be installed in conjunction with the panniers system.

We are aware after-market companies such as Givi may offer a combined top box and pannier system. As I am sure you can appreciate we have not directly tried or tested the combined top box and pannier system from Givi so are unable to comment on their suitability. However, we are confident that Givi would have carried out sufficient tests to ensure the accessories offered by them are suitable for the machine they were designed specifically for.

As with any machine the manufacturer would recommend a maximum load. For the Z1000SX the maximum recommended load in addition to the vehicle is 195kg, including rider, passenger, baggage, and accessories.

We trust the above information will be of some assistance to you".

Hope this is of interest to you all, so basically total load = Your weight+Passenger Weight+Panniers loaded+Topbox Loaded, must not be greater than 195kgs

Jasus, that's bad form, you'd think they'd just put in better subframes. They're sports tourers, they should be made to handle panniers, top box and 2 up. Leave the light subframes to the sports bikes.

Yes and within the max weight of the bike. Its usually detailed in the owners manuals of all bikes. Most people tend to ignore it.

Me too, took one look at the screen and walked away :o

yea, front end is a bit beaky (sorta like the 09/10 zx10), and all a bit too low or something

if looking for a sports tourer, I'd be seriously considering a k1200s (as well as mentioned, blackbird etc)

I had my heart set on one as soon as they came out .. sat on them at the bike show and they felt small. add the luggage issue I was dissapointed so settled on an FZ1

I was the opposite with the z1000. Never thought much of it in photos, but in reality they're very nice. Except for the pipes, not a fan of them

Reading about panniers and luggage put me in mind of this genius who evidently forgot he had them.
Poor bloke but I can never get enough of it :D:D:D:D:D:D

Ahh the z1000sx. I want one so bad, have yet to test drive one though. I do like that type of seating position but it requires good hip flexor alignment.

When they came out first, they claimed that the weight of a top box and panniers changed the handling characteristics of the bike and made it dangerous. Hence why they designed the stock panniers/topbox to specifically not allow it. Interesting that they have changed their tune.
I always felt the modern Z1000's were struggling in top gear & needed an extra gear, if you know what I mean

The engine was tuned specifically for mid range power not high end power. It was not meant to be a 200mph beast, it was meant to be fun in the twistys and smooth on the motorway.

To be honest, I never gave it a 2nd look until I got a girlfriend who loves going on the back of the bike, saw the Z1000SX in the flesh one eveing in Laragh and thought it looked great, had aftermarket pipes too which was a plus.
When they came out first, they claimed that the weight of a top box and panniers changed the handling characteristics of the bike and made it dangerous.

I thought this might come into play alright, much like the Pan Europeans which developed a weave with their top boxes, of course Honda would never admit to this, cause they're Honda, and nothing they build is ever substandard (reg/rect anyone?).

So its easier just to say "We don't recommend you do that." rather than hold your hand up and say "We f*cked up." and issue a recall.

Makes you wonder how thoroughly tested these machines are before going to production...
