I'm thinking about getting laser eye surgery, a friend suggested going somewhere like Poland as it would be cheaper?
Just wondering has anyone had it done here or abroad? Any recommendations? Thanks

Because you need regular checks after laser surgery (usually the next day, one week, one month, 3 months and 6 months) I wouldn't recommend it.

    Aye, as Daisies says.
Also, if anything goes wrong, you'd have to fly to Poland to have it addressed, or else pay someone here to do it. I can't imagine, when you take into account flights, hotels, etc. that the savings would justify the the huge negative of not being able to get to your clinic easily for checkups and for problems. And that's aside from the fact that you'd be largely clueless as to what clinics are any good there.

I find it hard to believe that you would look for a cheepo firm to laser your eyes.

I worked with one young lady that had laser treatment go wrong (I don’t know where it was done)

I would have to agree with Daisies. I looked into getting it done abroad, and after I weighed up the pros and cons I decided to get it done in Dublin. I couldn't be happier with the decision I made. After I had the surgery I had the comfort of my own bed and the piece of mind that if I needed to go back to the hospital for any reason it was only 15 mins away from my house.

My sister had her laser eye surgery in Turkey with a help of a reputable medical tourism provider (PlacidWay), so I think there's nothing wrong with going abroad for eye treatment. The company gave us a list of reputable clinic and highly recommended clinic/hospital as well as gave us advice on hospitals regarding their success rates and complications for treatment and whether they are accredited by organisations.

She's been wearing contacts and eye glasses for almost half of her life. It was definitely a scary experience for her, especially being in a foreign country, although I was with her to accompany and assist her. She had her consultation first, and find out that she's a good candidate for LASIK. The next day, we went back again on the hospital for the treatment, the whole procedure lasted less than 20 minutes. She said the procedure was just a burning sensation, but I would see her non stop tearing for about three to four hrs. We just spent the whole week in Turkey. The follow up check-ups were done at home. Her specialist at home acknowledged the good job of her treatment abroad. My sister is very happy with the result and is no longer wearing any contacts or glasses. My only advice if you want to have treatment abroad is to DO YOUR RESEARCH before you go, get recommendations, ask around, look at experience, how long the doctor has been operating, credentials. Don’t just go down, walk into the first office/hospital you see and expect to get great results.

How much cheaper was the surgery in Turkey?

I'd say they'll pay for you to fly out and stay a few nights in Turkey in light of recent events so factor that in as well!!

Yes no doubt it will be cheaper but check ups, cover and back up are needed. Better off getting it done at home as puts mind at ease too. You only have the one set of eyes!

I have a referral discount for Optilase if anyone needs it. Had Lasik done in january 2015 at Ely Place. My eyes were -3 both and are now 20/20! Happy with outcome and you can claim tax back or avail of seasonal discounts and of course the referral scheme where they post you a cheque for €100 each time you refer someone.
