Overlooked Failure in NCT?

    Hi all,

not that I am unhappy about it, but I noticed that a couple of things were overlooked in NCT on my car and not mentioned as a failure.
The car failed on small stuff that I was aware off (focusing lights..).

So when I go back for a retest (also onto the ramp), will they check only what is listed as fail on the sheet?
Because it should have failed on a missing spare wheel for example, but nothing mentioned.
Wondering if I leave it like that or still get the missed part fixed (there was more than just the spare wheel)?

    Thanks :o

    that's not a fail

There is other examples, for example I don't have an E mark on my brand new front tyres.
That should be a fail as far as I know? Also a non working indicator.

Dont get me wrong, this will be fixed anyway for the retest, as it was on my list to do. I had to go for that appointment due no appointments available at all.
    But just really wondering.

I think unless its a really obvious fail, they wont go looking for it and will only retest what was marked as a fail the first time around.

Why dont your brand new tires have the E mark?

Retesting is only done for those items that failed first time round.

Fix the little things and you'll be fine.

E mark is only a cautionary warning on the NCT.

According to the NCT manual an E mark is a MUST.

Dont ask me why mine don't have an E mark ha, got them private and didnt check for it. :/

Well I should be fine so :) thanks!

What does getting them private mean?

He didn't buy them off a dealer / garage

E mark is a must on NCT, not pass/advisory as suggested. I work in a garage in Tallaght and see a lot of cars come from Tallaght test centre. On one occasion we've had to refuse to allow a car out because it was so dangerous. NCT had failed him on a side light not working. Some of the other stuff they miss is just shocking so I'm not suprised you can find biggrr daults than they did. Regardless of NCT fix anything dangerous for piece of mind. NCT is the biggest rip off scam and joke, always remember it's a private company so profit is very import to them. Once a car fails on something their guaranteed their retest fee.

In relation to the E mark on the tyres, it may be on one sidewall only, so depending on the way they were mounted it may be on the inner sidewall of the tyres, therefore they may be E marked but not visible without checking the other sidewall.

Okay, I'm not surprised now, I knew you cant trust them but in my case I (thank god) know about the car and in what shape it is in, so Im not worried in case they overlooked something important/dangerous.
It failed on what I was expecting it to fail, but the E mark for example baffled me.

    Good to know.

I'd trust the NCT a heck of a lot more than I'd trust the opinions of most owners and some mechanics.

Are you absolutely certain there is no E-mark on the tyres, as already mentioned it could be on the inward facing sidewall, it'll be designated by either a "e" or a "E".

Since 2007 all tyres must have an E-mark so if your tyres genuinely don't have it then they're probably really old which is another concern. What's the manufacturing date code?

The Tyres are actually new, I will check the inside as soon as I can, must look up the date code again

    whats an E mark?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,786 ✭✭✭slimjimmc

    whats an E mark?

It's a circle or rectangle containing the letter "e" or "E" suffixed with a number. The mark generally denotes that the vehicle component (which in this discussion is a tyre) has been approved by an EU country (represented by the number) for use throughout the EU. It demonstrates that the tyre meets all applicable EU standards and is legal for use. If you look carefully you'll see it on important parts such as tail lights, head lights, seat belts, window glass.

Kinda surprised that people still see the nct as a scam tbh. I've never had a car fail on something it shouldn't have, and recently put a 15 year old fiesta through, passed first time. If they were looking for a re-test fee my car would be a great candidate for failing

I think it depends on the mechanic really.
In my case I'm not saying it's a scam and I don't generally say it anyway because ive made only fair experiences so far.

I put old cars thorugh before with no bother, but I have to admit that I saw "stupid" cases where either the mechanic had no clue or it was a "scam" case....

Unless you don't get the car back within a month, at which point a FULL retest is carried out.

Its not a total scam but working as a mechanic I see a nice cross section of strange fails, like badly worn balljoints that have no play and pass the retest with no work. Recently had a Fiat Punto in that failed on a badly deteriorated brake hose that I had fitted only 2 days before the test brand new, passed retest again with no work.....
when you complain though you get nowhere, nobody wants to know and I have never had a retest fee refunded despite appeals and proof etc

Its certainly not a scam but it does leave me bemused at times :)

The lack of a proper appeals system is terrible.

family member had an opel vetra passed with an engine management light on, she had jammed her glasses case over the light, should this should have failed when they plugged their equipment on to the car.

The Nct don't plug any equipment into the car. A sniffer is placed into the exhaust pipe and a probe placed in the dipstick tube to measure oil temperature, that's it. Glasses case over the light:pac: Complete rubbish.....

Yes, I brought in the car with the worn balljoint for the retest for the customer, had words at the counter but got shrugs all round and a complaints form..... I still have the letter somewhere of a nice lady informing me that the balljoint must have come back into tolerance for the retest and please go away basically

That's great:D No need for new ball joints anymore just drive to your nearest Nct centre, drive away, drive back again and voila it's grown back, brilliant. It wasn't Stephen King's Christine by any chance?

not rubbish, the truth, the light is still on in the car, it seems some valve or other needs seeing to.

The engine light being on is of no concern to the nct tester

Egr valve being a vectra. As Rex-x said engine management light isn't the testers problem. They definitely check the abs light works and then extinguishes after a few seconds.

"Complete rubbish" is either an over reaction to your thought that there is equipment plugged into the car or a reaction to the glasses case over the light comment/idea.
