    Hello all,

My insurance policy runs out in a few days but I am out of the country for another month or longer. They want me to renew straight away but I would prefer not to as I am a young driver and as Im sure you can appreciate every months payment is a costly one.

Also Im thinking about changing insurance companies so if i do is it ok to have a new renewal date with this company with a time of no insurance policy being held in the mean time or will this effect my no claims bonus etc.?

Those of you who are more knowledgeable than myself I look forward to hearing from you all.. Thanks in advance!

    Alan

Howdy! I'm gona guess you're with axa? I got a similar letter from them, just email the company anyways saying can you have your cert of no claims, and say you won't be renewing, then sort the rest out with the new company, I had an awful time trying to get my car insured, and when i did I insured it about a week before even driving it, at the time it was on axle stands in my garden :pac:

So long story short let the current one run out and then worry about the rest when you need to, ring the new company and ask them to be sure :)

NCD doesn't normally disappear unless there is more than a 2 year gap between policies in your name.

Evidence of NCD accrued should be supplied with your renewal paperwork.
    Renewing your motor insurance

Under Non-Life Insurance (Provision of Information) (Renewal of Policy of Insurance) Regulations 2007 (SI No. 74/2007) your motor insurance company must issue your insurance renewal notice not less than 15 working days before the date of expiry of your insurance policy. It is also required to include with the notice your no claims discount certificate. You will need this certificate if you want to renew your motor insurance with a different insurance company.

You can let your policy lapse for a few months and return to your current insurer or move to a new one without losing any Bonus. The new policy will run 12 months from the day you put it back on the road

Just remember that you won't even have fire or theft while the vehicle is laid up and your insurer/new insurer is not obliged to quote you the same price they are today

Make sure the car is not parked in a public place when not insured.

Tell them you want your certificate of no claims discount. ASAP if you haven't received it already.

You don't need to take out another policy immediately, but obviously don't leave your car on a public road while it's uninsured. Or on a flood plain or under a tree which looks like it could fall over...

Your new insurer will ask you to fill out a "gap in cover" letter to say that you haven't done anything naughty in the time since your old policy expired.
