SMax 1.6 or 2.0

We are looking to change our car to get a Ford S-Max 7 seater. We have the option of either the Style model (with a 1.6 diesel engine) or a Zetec model (with a 2.0 diesel engine).
    I am curious if:
    (a) Does the 1.6 engine have enough power for the SMax, and
    (b) Is there much difference in reliability between the two engines?

    Any feedback would be appreciated.

Given that motor tax is now based on emissions rather than engine size I really don't see why you should settle for the entry level smaller engine and also entry level specification. It's a no brainer for me, go with the 2.0 litre Zetec. Both engines are made by Peugeot/Citroen so reliability will be in or around the same, if you plan on using it to shuttle people about then the 2.0 litre will do it with ease.

How recent are the SMax engines made by the French manufacturers? All the way back to 2007ish?

The only Ford made diesel engine was the old 1.8 TDCi, the other diesel engines are all PSA units.
