There new music sounds great to, they seem to have moved away from the constant house policy, don't listen to base much , the quality of there djs seemed poor when i did listen to it.

There web page looks very professional nrg-dublin.com

NRG are a tru pro pirate, music isn't to my taste much of the time but i can't fault them otherwise, base is okay but i wish like tonik they would move away from mostly house music, no need for every pirate to play it

You have to wonder why BAI have not filled the gap in the market, we seem to have every other type of radio station, granted there's rte pulse but that's on DAB which nobody uses

BAI don't fill gaps in the market; that's something for the stations to do.

Do they not put licences out to tender, I taught that was the process ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,381 ✭✭✭✭end of the road

i don't think anyone wants to apply for a dance licence, no point anyway as it will just end up turning into another pop station in the end, no i think dance music is best left to the pirates to be honest

They run competitons for licences, yes. The last application series for a new station in Dublin had no applicants willing to propose a station playing "dance music". Similarly there have been very few temporary licence applications for a station to broadcast "dance music". Power FM is the only one which tried it but there isn't anything to stop somebody from doing one over any other type of music or output. This alludes either that demand is low or the desire isn't there. Dance led stations seem happy to go on FM without a licence and risk raids; certainly it's part of the explanation.

Listening to Nrg this morning in north east Dublin,A French station and BBC R 2 kept interfering as i was listening , Must be high pressure or something,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 426 ✭✭Rock Solid

When there is high pressure weather systems it is possible to hear Fm stations further than normal, Ive got stations from Poland and France on my car radio in Tallaght, NRG FM is suffering from BBC radio 1 on 88.1 from Northern Ireland, difficult too find a clear frequency in Dublin.

http://www.dxinfocentre.com/tropo_nwe.html will give you an idea of when interference from BBC Radio 2 will be occuring. The station you got from Poland is caused by Sporadic E interference and is much more difficult to predict but causes interference over longer distances

88.1 comes from Sandale in Cumbria, not Northern Ireland, but I'm open to correction on that.

Yes its bbc radio 2 im picking up in the north east

NRG sounding very pro and slick from 12 - 6pm, these guys know what there doing and will end up in legal radio.

I hope so they have captured a market that is there for the taking. Id say they just need an investor to get behind them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,381 ✭✭✭✭end of the road

as much as a legal dance station on fm would be nice its best it doesn't happen, as the product would be a diluted product from the start and dilute more as time goes on, NRG would have to dilute what they do if they went legal which would be a shame

Great station, nice and tight links and jingle package, no gaps in shows, djs turn up, mixing live from 6pm weekdays which is great, weekends could be more pro, but good, same music all day, needs some summer club tunes and more retro tracks, an hour of retro dance at lunchtime be fab.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,014 ✭✭✭castle2012

Was the station raided its off air ??

NRG are a very slick and professional operation, and they could really raise some eyebrows if they keep this quality up.
They've been doing gigs in some venues too, including Show Dublin, which highlights the reach and impact that they are creating.

Their on-air persona is very good. Gone are the days of "How'ya to Damo is Cabra, keepin' it locked, bud".
Competitions and the like, also. Fair play to them. Hopefully they keep it up.

I have to wonder how they are paying for the power of their masts. No ads, nothing. It's hardly some bits and pieces they have bought from other pirates.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 426 ✭✭Rock Solid

Yep, was listening in today, there live again from 12pm - Midnight ! Fantastic sound and quality djs, am sure they are using top end gear and link systems, the most professional dance station since the 90s, music needs a bigger variety, more retro tracks and current summer floorfillers would be nice too hear. These guys will end up in legal radio, Spin and 104 sound the same day by day. BBC radio 2 are strong these days with high pressure, maybe a new frequency like 91.9 sound better ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6 Cte

Maybe they don't wanna end up in legal radio... Legal radio is boring too many rules regulations etc etc, I listen to NRG cos they do what they do well and I like it, not mad on the lunchtime jock sounds a bit too happy and very wayhayhay but look each to there own, I listen for the music ,and as someone said above if NRG got a licence it would be diluted for sure no doubt about it... Break the rules they were made to be broken

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,539 ✭✭✭ghostdancer

been listening on and off over the last 2 weeks and pretty impressed. quite polished for a pirate station.
music-wise, a bit too much cheesy pop stuff at times, but overall pretty decent.

There's a lot of experience in the team behind NRG, and it shows in their output. Fair play them, they are consistent and solid.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 426 ✭✭Rock Solid

High Pressure weather causing NRG problems on 88.1FM, due to BBC Radio 2 from the U.K. BBC 1 very clear on 99.4 and 99.7 in south Dublin.

Temp stations due on next week, they could allocate any frequency but knowing the BAI its a deliberate choice to cause problems for pirates!

Sometimes I gotta wonder how much you actually know Rock Solid and how much you Bulls**t

"Knowing the Bai it's a deliberate choice to cause problems for pirates"

First of all do you think the Bai have nothing better to do than waste their time thinking oh i know lets licence a station and put it on 88.1 or 93.2 or 107.1 or wherever theres a pirate cos that will get rid of the pirates and second of all the Bai have nothing to do with frequency allocation, if you actually knew what you were talking about rather than spoofing your way through threads you'd realise what a stupid comment you'd made

    The Bai issue Licences

    Comreg issue frequencies

And frequency allocation is based on many things including where the transmission site is , what height the site is above sea level , what power transmitter is to be used , type of aerials etc etc they don't just say oh the a pirate there pop it on one pc there frequencies

I wonder how much you know, no need to get nasy, am fully aware of what the BAI and Comreg do, it's Comreg who allocate the frequency for the operator's, kinda strange that they would pick 88.1 and 99.5 as there's plenty of space on the band in the area of the operator's!

A lot of the above are irrelevant when it comes to allocating temporary frequencies in Dublin.

There are a number of frequencies used in Dublin for temps and there have been times when Comreg has chosen a frequency that would frustrate a pirate.

And in truth who could them - its an efficient way of clearing the band.

until they return again after, or move frequency. so its a pointless exercise really.

Not really - its hard to retain listeners when you are changing frequencies all the time and/or if you have to go off air for a few days or weeks.

RDS has helped but imagine you are advertising with eg NRG and then it goes off air for s few days - you would not be happy !

no but i think listeners and advertisers to pirates advertise and listen knowing this is a possibility. stations are very good at telling people if they are moving frequency. the moving is a nucence sure but it isn't as much of a problem for people as we'd think

It is more accurate to say that a pirate is on a Comreg allocated frequency in the first place and has to move than it is to say that Comreg allocate what a pirate is on in order to make it move off of it.

Should be safe for them to return now. The temp station that was allocated 88.1 has been cancelled. It was an outdoor cinema in Celbridge.
