    Hello all,
I have a 2 yr old bullock with a very lame back left leg. Had the vet out and gave him 2 injections one was an antibiotic and the other an anti-inflammatory.

He's in great form but I cannot hold onto him due too the leg and he doesnt appear too be getting any better.

My question is will I get penalized because of this injury when I go too sell him too the factory?

Also will this affect his grade even if he has good shape too him etc (besides having the bad leg)

    Thanks

    25 days whelan.

I'm just curious too know if I go too the likes of liffeys or some other processor does the lame leg go against you in a big way and im wondering do you have too declare the lame leg before you go in?

(I usually go too the mart so not up to date with the factories)

    Thanks,

Make sure you're out of date for the anti-inflammatory as well as the antibiotic.

I would imagine that the lameness won't matter in the factory as long as it doesn't affect the meat. If there's an abscess found in the leg, or a joint is swollen, or there's a large bruise in the meat then these will carry consequences. If the vet thought the leg had been dislocated then I'd be more patient as even a partial recovery will take a while (isolate if necessary) and any damage that heals will look better on PM plus any muscle loss that has occurred may be made up to some degree.

If the lower leg is swollen and it's a part that is cut off I imagine that wouldn't matter as long as the remainder is okay.

Not really the answer that you are after but I do know that an animal has to be able to walk on/off trailer or lorry. If it cannot do so then it is unfit to travel.
Know of a case of a local guy who brought a very lame cow to factory, cow limped off trailer and Dept vet witnessed it. Guy got a warning from the Vet and cow was skipped after slaughter. Guy got no money and was lucky not to have to pay for slaughtering, I presume 5th quarter cover the costs.
