Alarm going off

My S-max alarm has started to go off without apparent cause over the last couple of weeks. Unfortunately it seems to happen at night most often between 11pm and 2am. Never seems to happen during the day. What could be causing this? Is there an easy/temporary fix until I have the chance to have it looked after? For example can I lock/double lock the doors without engaging the alarm?

    Your battery could be dying.
It was happening to me as well that the alarm just kept going off until one day the car wouldn't start.
New battery and it never happened again.

Will be going away to France for a couple of weeks on Sunday. Is there any way I can test to see if battery is a problem prior to heading off or am I better off replacing the battery? Given that I have had a number of problems with the car in recent months I decided to organise breakdown insurance for the trip - I wonder should I take a chance and maybe test out the breakdown cover?

Any decent motor factors should be able to test the battery for you.

If in doubt, they cost about €50 to replace, and if you find a friendly seller they might be willing to sell it to you on the basis that they will take it back and refund you if it doesnt sort the problem.

I wouldn't take the risk. Better off buying a battery but as djimi said, any decent motor factor should be able to test the power coming from the battery.
How long ago since you last changed the battery?

Its the original battery so is 6 years old ... like a lot of things in that car at the moment it looks like its coming to its end of life time! I can see the attraction of buying a new car every couple of years .. now if only I had the bobs!!

Change that battery, 6 years is a hell of a long time.

Like a lot of other things though, I would like to think I could get a replacement batterty for €50. Its a 80ah 700CCA spec battery and a quick check seems to suggests it could retail at anything from €100 to €160.

Similarly, with tyres I always get a pain in a certain location when I hear of people saying they can put on premium brands for €85 or so a corner when Kumho or Hankooks cost me a min of €150 a corner. Such is life!
