    Hi guys,

I have myself a new second hand bike and am in the market for a lock.
What do ye think is the best out there? Something not overly heavy (as I probably wont be leaving it in town overnight for example, using it to cycle to work etc).

Bikes worth about 1500 when new, so maybe that should weigh on my decision to buy a better than average lock?

I was looking at these guys:

    They any good?

For a bike in that price category, I'd recommend going up a step to the Kryptonite Evolution series (the orange ones). The Kryptonite New York range gives a lot of peace of mind, but they are heavy. The Evolution range is not a bad balance. I use an Evolution mini on a commuter bike with security skewers, which works very well. I am choosy about where I leave the bike mind.

Depends where you're going to leave it.

IMO a Krypto Mini and security skewers or cable lock is the handiest combination.

I don't like frame mounted locks as they rattle badly and can cosmetically damage the frame, and a heavy lock makes for an uncomfortable backpack.

So you're not bringing the bike to work, and you're not leaving it out in town? Where will you be leaving it?
Bear in mind you are going to need to lock the bike up at home also. There are a lot of stories of garden sheds, and even aparment balconies being raided for bikes.

If your bike is valuable get a big strong lock, do not try to scrimp. The grey kryptonite lock you linked to appears regularly on the stolen bikes thread. People assume that the kryptonite brand is enough to ward off thieves, but in reality that grey one is only basic quality. The orange kryptonite minis are well regarded, and may suit your usage, but I wouldn't be leaving my nice new bike anywhere without one of the top of the range Kryptonite (New York/Fahgeddaboutit/Yellow) locks, or one of the equivalent Abus locks.

You should be looking at a budget of €100 or so. Also, look up correct locking techniques, as you can regularly see good bikes with good locks locked badly (eg. lock around a single spoke on a Quick Release front wheel).

I have this http://www.bike24.de/1.php?content=8;navigation=1;menu=1000,5,74;product=31978 I find it very good. Sold secure gold standard.
The case fits on bottle cage mounts, it's fairly heavy though.

Sorry, OP wasnt clear, I wont be using it to cycle it into town too often, but I WILL be using it to cycle to work more (and work has a fairly secure place to leave it)

Yeah, the more I read on it the more I see that the lock I linked isnt really up to snuff sadly. I will probably get the Evo mini one mentioned earlier, it seems to suit my needs.

    Thanks for the info guys
