Beginner building a bike

So, I need to solve my N+1 problem and was thinking of doing it the hard way and building something from the frame up.

I know this isn't the most cost effective thing in the world, but as my fleet expands, I feel I should know more about maintaining them. Plus there's something really satisfying about fixing your own stuff.

I've managed to figure out the basics like changing chains, cassettes, cables and such and am pretty mechanically minded.

I would probably get my LBS to do the headset install.

Is this a good idea or a bad idea? I thought about buying a 2nd hand bike to mess around with, but then I saw a Surly Cross Check and decided I need one. Bad.

Its a great idea, I did the same with my Genesis. The main advantage is that you get to build it up with exactly what parts you want/can afford.

The LBS fitted the headset and faced off the forks for me, if you want it really easy then they could clean up the threads (as they are covered in paint) on the BB and rear hanger so everything will fall into place otherwise you may encounter some minor fiddling getting the BB in and rear derailer on.

I'm also thinking of buying a frame and building up. My preference would be to get a mechanic to do this for me, does anyone have a recommended one in the Cork area?
