The walls in my home office are matt white, but the ceiling is varnished tongue and groove. I was thinking of painting it and wondered what color to use and what paint type? Thanks.

Apply a coat of BIN primer, then fill all the grooves with caulk, making sure to smooth off with your finger (this will prevent unsightly black lines of the grooves). Then finish with 2 coats of waterbased satin finish.

Sorry to jump on this but would you have to lightly sand the varnish first? Thinking of doing similar with skirting boards

    Yes, always sand between coats.
