PC Upgrade

    Hey all

I'm just looking for some advice. I'm upgrading my PC, and am looking for the best buys for components .. working on a budget and all that. The PC is really a glorified media center and TW Rome 2 box.

    I'm upgrading to a 1150 motherboard.
This seems to do the job for the motherboard.

Will probably look at an SSD for the OS and games, but not right now.

I'm looking at picking up 8gb DDR3 RAM, and a i5 processor. People mention adverts, but to be honest it always seems unrealistically priced for second hand stuff. Can anyone point me in the direction of some decent priced RAM/ processors? Much appreciated.

The board you linked too is an LGA 1155 (last gen).

Thanks for the reply. It's got pretty good Processor support though right? I'm looking for a 2/3 year lifecycle.

Here is the Gigabyte webpage for the GA-Z77-DS3H (rev. 1.1). You will find a link to the supported CPU's there.

They are all last gen Intel processors. You should probably get a Haswell (current gen LGA 1150) compliant board.

Thanks .. actually I thought if the socket type matched, the mb would support even haswell processors ;/

It's a z87 that you're loooking for by the way (at least if you're overclocking). Broadwell (after haswell) will work with the newest z97 boards, which also support the haswell refresh (devil's canyon).

Could you fill out the guide I think its in a sticky. for a media centre you would be best with an apu or i3 imo.

Okay, so I was looking at the wrong mobo great. The PC works fine as a media center already, but the problem I have is I only have a dual core cpu, so to upgrade the mobo and ram have to go as well. I play a lot of Rome 2, and it's a real CPU killer.
