Does anyone know know what the position is when someone cancels Sky a few days after its been installed? Sky have confirmed that the box will be collected on a specific date but what about the dish and cables....are they also removed?

Yeah, I would have thought that the dish would go whatever about the cables.

But there's a little twist to this. There was a Sky setup in this house previously and when the installer came out he removed on old dish from a wall bracket but used the same bracket. The old dish is still in the shed but the old cables were just cut off and left pinned to the wall of the house with no room for "play".

Assuming he removes the newly fitted dish and leaves the new cables in place then all is good on that front except when it comes to the old dish. Should that be put back again? Even if he does put it up again the he would either have to use the new cabling or extend the old cabling that is there but which is now too short to reach from LNB to box.

In short should the installer leave things as he found them?

If he removes the dish (which I doubt he'd bother tbh), I'd be very surprised if he reinstalled the old one

He didnt fit a new bracket therefore he did not perform a full instillation as would have been required. Im just trying to gauge what the norm is in these situations.

He'll take the dish and skybox. Although if further down the road you decide to get sky again he'll put in new cabling unless you sign a piece of paper to say that you didn't want him to and you were happy to use existing cable. If it was me I'd tell the engineer who comes to remove it( unlikely to be the same one) that the dish is yours, the chances are he won't question this as they cost about £15 stg. Take the new one down before he arrives and stick up the old one.;)

I am expecting that to happen. But as there was a working FTA system there before the new install my own thinking is that it should be left that way.

I'd be interested in hearing the views and opinions of the installers who frequent this forum and who are the very people who fit and remove these systems on behalf of Sky.

Just wondering why would anyone sign up to Sky, have it installed, and then cancel again?

I would be of the opinion that you are own your own regarding re installing your free to airbox. Who intalled it for you in the first place.

Thats what "cooling off" periods are for and I'm sure this is not the first time this has happened around the country and hence my question regarding leaving things "as they were".

Im not being evasive but there are reasons for the cancellation which I cant go into now because of ongoing investigations.

Just to recap and explain. A friend of mine rented a house where there was an old working Sky dish and cabling. The previous tenant obviously had this installed but there was no Sky box when the friend moved in. I give her a combo box which was used for FTA channels.

She decided to get Sky tv and the installer came out and removed the old dish from the wall bracket and fitted a new one together with the cabling and obviously set up the box. Because of something serious that occurred (it's not relevant to this thread anyhow) she had no choice but to cancel her subscription. As she was within the cooling off period she was quite entitled to do this.

She will now revert to the FTA set up and thats why I asking about having the old dish put back in place.

I should have mentioned above that the "problems" that my friend encountered had absolutely nothing to do with the installer or any part of his work including labour and materials. In fact he did a good job with the new installation.

It sounds like you basically wanted a free satellite system set up.

How so? He's said about 3 times that there was a working fta system there before the Sky install

They didn't like it? They found out that it is a waste of money? That's two possible reasons.

Or suddenly got made redundant, sacked, company went bust, had accident and had to stop work. A Sky Sub should be 1st casualty if not on an income.

Hadn't considered any of those. Thank you.

Well now that we've established that there are lots of reasons whereby a person can cancel their account it would be nice to get a reply to my question.

I'm a tad surprised at the lack of responses from people who visit this forum and are installers in real life. Just to reassure everyone that there is nothing sinister about this. There was/is a problem regarding the person's account but the installation end of things didn't come into the equation at all. :)

You seem willing (and able) to put the old dish back up.
Why not just do that before the collection agent arrives, let him have the new dish and box.
Your friend has a working dish, Sky get their equipment back, and no worries about the guy messing with the wiring.

ps. can't see the collection guy taking the trouble to reinstall the old dish....the odds are it's a contractor and he wouldn't be paid for doing this.

I wouldn't have the tools or the knowledge to replace a dish but as the dish is now the property of Sky I'd be loathe to touch it even if I were able.

Im sure if the engineer left the new cabling in place I could get someone to put the old dish back and everyone's happy. But thats what I'm trying to find out in this thread.

In one way I would agree with that but if he removes the new cables then he will leave the house without a working FTA system which was there prior to the Sky install.

Apart from cutting the old cables off at the LNB he also cut the old double cable where it passed through the wall into the FTA box, pulled it out and threw it on the drive. He then used that hole in the wall to feed through the new double cable. So at the end of the day I believe that he will have to leave the house with a FTA system the way he found it a couple of weeks ago.

Sky call them engineers so that will do me Mr Pedantic.

As this is my thread I dont particularly want to see you posting your usual dribble. Why not try posting something constructive for a change.

It is illegal in most of Europe to call someone an engineer who has not got professional qualifications. This won't be the first time the murdoch empire has broken the law and I doubt it will be the last.

I'm not posting dribble and I don't care who started the thread if it is not correct. Sky don't use engineers, they are installers so get it right.

Not in Ireland. All sorts from metalworkers to code dabblers call themselves engineers here without any qualifications and there is no public outrage.

if i was in your position when the engineer calls to collect the box if he takes the dish, which i dont think he will, offer him a score to put the old one back up, it will take him five minutes if that, he will have the tools out anyway so no hardship and he gets a score, most engineers will be very obliging, i have used one fella several times for various things regarding tv, sound systems ect.
i thinks its the sky box they will be looking for as they are expensive now with the built in wifi and 1tb hard drive

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,249 ✭✭✭kbell

When I installed for sky, in the very few cases where I had to do this, just taking the box(s) back was acceptable .
But it all depended on the customer/installer/agent and the circumstances.

Say it to the engineer, they'll not care if they don't get the dish.

That would work out good and if he doesnt leave the dish I will initially argue that the active FTA system that was there before the new Sky install needs to be reinstated. This is where Im lost as I have no idea what instruction the installers are given in these circumstances.

I really cant see any installer removing the new cabling so if that was left in place then if needs be I would offer him money to put up the old dish if all else fails. But if it's the same guy who carried out the install a couple of weeks ago I wouldnt be confident of him doing anything. He was asked (and offered payment) to throw a cable into another room which was only 5' away from where he fitted the double cable and on the same wall and he refused.

The box is all repacked again and awaiting collection but its a 500gb one without the built in wifif.

Not an installer .... but I would take the opportunity to explain to whoever is sent out that IF s/he removes the dish and cabling then s/he WILL be required to put back what was there before the Sky installation.

Then it is up to the Sky rep to decide if s/he wants to refit the old dish or leave the new one.

You will be happy with either situation ..... and once s/he is aware of this I expect the 'sensible' decision to be made ;)

BTW ..... I would keep the Sky box in my possession until the situation with the dish is resolved ;)

Nothing like a little leverage if required. :)

Is it Ok then for somebody to call themselves an Engineer, but illegal for somebody else to call them one ???
Legislation (from most European countries) to back this up please......I'll be waiting a while I think.

Sounds like a plan Johnboy :)

I hadnt thought about using the box as a bargaining tool and it's something I might consider but I would be hopeful that the installer will leave the new cables in place. If he does then we can argue a bit about fitting the old dish in the event that he also wants to remove the new one and possibly I may even pay him for putting up the old one again just to avoid confrontation.

All I want to see is the working FTA system that was in place prior to the new Sky install and I dont think it's unreasonable to expect that.

Sorry Muffler, I just concluded that with all your activity on this section of boards that you must, by now, be somewhat accustomed to the mechanics of a Dish.
Apologies if I offended your lack of expertise........only kidding:).

Anyway, I'd bet that Sky are a lot more concerned about the Box than the Dish. the guy collecting it will probably want to get in and out as quickly as possible. Probably not even getting paid for this if it's one of their installation Engineers (sorry Winston).
If you start annoying him about reinstating the old set-up I'd say he will be quite happy to just get the box and leave.

I sincerely hope he just asks for the box and then heads off on his merry way. :)

On a more general note and just to clarify for anyone who is wondering about "the friend". This is in fact my daughter and as she lives on her own she doesn't really feel that confident about dealing with these matters so good old dad has to step in the odd time.

    Trust me....

Sky Installer will just call and collect box!

That's all thats required in an uninstall, only if you insist on removing the dish will they then do it!
    They get paid either way!

You mentioned that there was previously a twin cable for a FTA setup ( combi box) which was pulled out and replaced by new cable from dish by sky installer.
Was one cable connected to a terrestrial aerial ?
If so , and if you can't so it yourself , it might be worth offering the (un)installer a few quid to connect one cable to aerial .

The twin cable was coming from an old sky dish that was used for the FTA channels.

I probably should have explained a bit better about the combi box. There is an aerial in the attic that picks up freeview from NI and the cable from it runs down the inside of the wall and both it and the twin sat cable are then connected to a combi box.

The installer is due to call today to collect the box and whatever else he chooses but my daughter hasn't been given a fixed time yet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 46,547 ✭✭✭✭muffler

Just to update everyone on this. The installer rang her a couple of hours ago and my daughter asked what was he going to collect and he said the box obviously but asked if she was using the dish for FTA and she said yes. So he said that was fine and he would collect the box only.

True to his word he arrived and collected the box only and when he was leaving he asked if she had a "freeview" box as he put it and when she said yes he said something like "okay that's fine, because if you hadn't I could have left you one" Seemed like a very nice chap.

So panic over and just to say thanks to everyone here for their comments and advice. It's very much appreciated. :)
