Think your right but its difficult to prove unless you unplug the stalk switch

Sounds like the usual comm2000 fault, that's the unit the stalks plug into. They're not simple switches like older cars, the comm unit is essentially a computer that interfaces with the BSI across the CAN bus. There's a guy on ebay who refurbs them, he's probably your best shot if you can live without the car for a week. Don't disconnect the comm unit with the battery connected, the car won't start and will have an airbag fault until reset. Remember it is a computer, not a traditional switchgear.

Or you can chance a used one. You need to get one from a Xsara Picasso with the exact same features as yours (auto wipers, auto lights, rear wiper, EPS, trip computer, front fogs as applicable) to guarantee the best match possible. There's about 40 different variations of the comm unit fitted to different PSA cars since ~'01, some are interchangeable and some aren't, the only guaranteed way is to find one identical to yours from the same car. Expect to pay €60-80 for a used one in an Irish breakers. You might get lucky and find one being broken privately on adverts or donedeal from someone who doesn't know the value of them.

Changing it is handy if you have a T50 Torx bit for the wheel and a screwdriver for the airbag. If you're interested I can post a guide, or have a look around the net and you should find one, nearly all the PSA lineup is the same to change.
