If they're headed out I'd cut them with a stick or something. And spray them early next year.

nettles have gone to seed at this stage , won't get a lasting kill by spraying

Which is better for thistles and nettles?, thistles or nettlebsn?
Want to spray regrowth on heifers ground and knock back the thistles in the ditches before they flower

IMO thistle and nettles are fairly easy to kill. If they are your two main issue and no docks or other weeds I use MCPA cheap and cheerful it also happens to be the spray for rushes. I top them all and allow them regrow and spray. You can use a sticker in the spray as you will need it for rushers anyway

No docks in the ground I'm doing. We never got a chance to do much spraying until now and we've a few fields coming back after being mowed. I'll get mcpa so

Got a belt of dock star about two weeks ago. This field was very bad with about 5/6 plants per q/m. Full of grass now. We'll worth the few bob.

Thanks, good to see that it works. Have a couple of fields myself that I need to do....docks are taking over this year!

Is it okay to mix sprays, e.g. grazon and gallup, and put it all out at once?

I didn't think that it would get as good of a kill, another go late this year or next spring should do a right job!

If you mix sprays you need to know if they compliment each other. Why would you mix Gallup(a generic gysophate) and Grazon 90 a selective weedkiller.

I do not think they work togeather as gallup will kill earlier than the grazon even though they bot are systemic (I think) weedkillers this means that they kill the root first. Gallup will not give Grazon 90 enough time to get into the root to kill the roots of scrub.

The other issue is the reason you use Grazon 90, Terbel or scrubkiller is to kill woody weeds, broadleave weeds and leave the sides of ditches grassy so cattle will keep clean Gallup will kill everything and the grass will be slow ro recover and weeds will come back as fast if not faster than the grass.

Be better to wait until spring when the plants are small and growing well

Last years reseed was too late by the time it came up to spray or graze before the winter & in spring it was too strong to spray so we grazed it. As there is clover in the seed mix (gold tooth) we were given Eagle when we went to buy spray - didn't really do anything for the weeds on the two fields that we sprayed it on, didn't bother doing the 3rd paddock. (Bought under clear for this years reseed which was sown on 30th July & coming up nicely)

Currently hungry looking so we spread watery slurry on it last weekend & decided to buy Target Pasture Sward for it today - plan on spraying with mcpa (going to let clover take its chances) to clean up weeds before the really set in.

Should we spray first & then spread pasture sward once it starts to come back or spread fert first to get it back growing & then hit it with mcpa?

Id spray it first but your definally going to kill the clover with the mcpa

MCPA is grand as long as docks are not an issue should not be after eagle. MCPA should clean it up nicly,

hi-load micram will sort them docks and thistles, not sure if it will kill ragworth dose not say on label. MCPA will kill ragworth and thistle but will only kill top growth of docks.

Forefront t will kill the docks and ragwort, not sure about the thistles.
Just checked will kill thistles and dandelion as well.

Is there any clover safe spray for dandelion?

How soon after spraying with MCPA can you go topping? 5 days?

    P.s. no noxious weeds present

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,089 ✭✭✭nhg

And I am just wondering how many days after spraying MCPA before Livestock can safely be left back in to graze. No Ragworth in it, thankfully

I think it says 2 weeks on the can but I have let them graze after a week without any obvious ill effects.

Funny isn't it that you can graze glycophosphate after 5 days. It must move to the roots faster

The father bought 5 gallon of Spear because it was "cheaper" than either dockstar or hurler to spray docks with, I had refused to use it until last week and thought i'd do a trial on five acres of docks while he was away on holiday. I sprayed half the field with Spear the other half with dockstar and i might as well have pissed on the half that was sprayed with Spear, not a single dock gone curled. The father was home on sunday night and obviously was out yesterday going around stock and says to me last night, did you only spray half the field or what? Had to break it to him that cheap price ain't always cheap.

what was the kill like, sprayed with mcpa on saturday, mostly for thistles

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,089 ✭✭✭nhg

Sprayed 10 acres last Wednesday evening and the leaves are curling up nicely, so sprayed another 5 acres yesterday evening.

Bought our own 600L sprayer so that we could spray paddocks when suited ourselves, just want to clean up old grass as I believe grass management is most important.

We bought a rakemann grass harrow earlier in the year and find it a great job, it is amazing what dead grass comes off with it.

Sprayed reseed with underclear 6weeks after sowing this year. Wilted redshank for a few days but it took off again. Also notice some creeping buttercup leaf in it. Complete waste of time IMO. Would have been better going with a bag of manure

Hi Just Do It, the Rakeman 3000 cost €2700 back in April, great job altogether, we have a field known as 'the furry bog' and it took off so much dead grass off it that we had to take away the grass in a trailer - way too much to leave to rot on it!

There is a thread somewhere in this forum where Reggie talks about his Einbrook Harrow and he recommended the Rakeman to us.

We didn't bother with the seeder but can add it at any stage later if we want.
