Have RTÉ upgraded their studios to allow HD? Bill and the boys are looking sharp tonight.

For a long time it was only SD in studio and switching to HD for the game.

I think they have upgraded this studio for the World Cup. This was mentioned in the last 5 year plan. :D

Same again today for Mexico v Cameroon. Studio output seems to be in HD as well as the live match. Replays of 1st half for analysis appeared to be upscaled SD though.

The server being used for playins has probably not been upgraded to HD yet.

The following article appears in superannRTE.ie

"RTÉ Television produces first programme in HD from Studio 5.

Colleague Pat Fenton tells us that Saturday June 2nd was a landmark moment for RTÉ Television with the first ever High Definition production from RTÉ studios. The Epsom Derby was produced from Studio 5 in full High Definition where viewers were able to enjoy the O’Brien father and son victory in stunning quality. The development of HD facilities have been in the planning and implementation for the past two years in preparation for Euro 2012 and the London Olympics. RTÉ Two HD is now available on all the major platforms, Saorview, UPC and Sky.

RTÉ has been transmitting High Definition signals for the past year using the HD Lite method whereby material is sourced directly from the OB provider or from tape. Now RTÉ has its own HD production capabilities that will be grown and extended over the coming years. "

Sincere thanks to the engineers who built the systems, to operational staff for dealing with the complexity of dual systems and particularly to Sports for being most supportive. Roll on the Summer of Sports! Many thanks Pat for that information... CB

It looks like Studio 5 in the Television Centre was equipped with HD cameras just before this World Cup. https://twitter.com/kevineurotek/status/472096909247913984
RTÉ also have an EU tender out for 32 HD studio cameras (basically re-equipping the entire Television Centre it seems). So, much more HD on the way! :D
II.1.5)Short description of the contract or purchase(s)RTÉ invites submissions, from suitably qualified Tenderers to supply up to 32 High Definition Studio Camera and Lenses as defined within this tender document over a 4 year period extendable by up to 2 years in two separate Lots.
RTÉ intend to procure Camera chains with Lenses from Lot 1 and/or Camera chains with no Lenses from Lot 2 and/or Lenses only from Lot 3.
As part of Phase 1 in 2014 RTÉ expect to purchase 8 cameras with an option of purchasing up to 9 lenses.

The Late Late Show has been in HD for the last few weeks since the new season started.

Not sure what studio this is, or if any other RTE programs are now HD. Champions League coverage has HD studio too (same as for the World Cup)

Last night they showed a clip from last year's Late Late and the difference between that SD picture and the new HD was night and day.

Late Late comes from Studio 4, and Champions League Studio 5, both are HD capable. :)

Very unusual for the Late Late to get a new set mid season.

I'm sure this is only a few weeks into the LLS season

Their Cork studio where the Today show comes from looks HD.

Elmo said the Late Late would be getting a new set in January. That would be mid season.

This upgrade of Studio 5 must be for playback of recorded material as the studio is already HD capable and has been since the 2014 World Cup: http://svgeurope.org/blog/headlines/world-cup-broadcasting-rte-moves-to-full-hd-with-new-studio-cameras/
Posters during the WC commented that the clips played in during studio analysis were not in HD.

Yip. Same again for the Germany Ireland match on Tuesday night. Studio & live match in HD, recorded stuff for analysis, SD.

I noticed this also during the All-Ireland Final programme when I finally got around to watching it. Matches which were broadcast previously in HD had their highlight shown in SD, looked pretty poor actually.

I flicked on to the Boris Becker interview on tonight's Late Late and wondered by it wasn't in HD .. turns out that interview was pre-recorded. Mary Black now live .. and in HD.

Yea, but that's studio 4, don't know when playback system for that studio will be upgraded.

I see that RTE is now accepting adverts in HD. An email went out to the ad agencies and media planners recently.

Recent RTÉ tender - TV Studio Upgrades 2015
    Detailed description
RTE intend to upgrade two of its existing TV production galleries from SD to HD in 2015. RTE will request suitable companies for the supply of equipment, system integration and associates services. The tender may consist of lots for equipment, system integration and associates services and these will be further defined within the tender document.

    Estimated cost excluding VAT
    Range: between €1m and €3m

An RTE spokeswoman said: "We have been implementing studio high definition (HD) upgrades on a phased basis for the last four years. This is the last phase of the four-year programme converting the remaining two main studio control rooms to HD. All equipment being replaced is well beyond design life and is no longer supported by the manufacturers. It would actually be more expensive to replace with standard definition (SD) as most manufacturers no longer make SD equipment." Not sure about it, too much brick work in the interview area, but the over all look of the set very well designed.

bring back the carpet I say!
