    quick question..i'm helping a friend

vodafone internet stopped working...the dsl and internet light are off(old netopia modem)

    they bought a new tp-link TL-WR841N

i've plugged it into master socket and logged into router via ethernet

    status is "WAN PORT UNPLUGGED"

also plugged in a working EIRCOM 2247 router... and dsl is green ...internet is red

i rang vodafone and they're not sure if it's a line problem or the new tp-link needs to be configured?

do i have a line fault or do i need to go and setup the router

    thanks for any help

Is the tp link a DSL modem? It looks like it's just a router that needs to be connected to a modem first.

You just connected an ethernet WAN port to a phone line. Totally wrong Im afraid.

They bought the wrong thing. Thats a cable router not a DSL Router/Modem. Return it for what they actually need, it should have ADSL in the title eg: http://www.argos.ie/static/Product/partNumber/1418828/Trail/searchtext%3EADSL.htm

    ok guys are you sure

    ill tell them

It doesnt. It takes an RJ45 cable(ethernet) not an RJ11(phone). The newer eircom sockets have an RJ45 socket on one side so it will fit, but its meant to be a phone connection(which is smaller and also fits).

To make the one they have they need a separate modem which just means having two boxes instead of one pointlessly. And a modem only unit would have to be ordered online.

Go back to harvey norman, tell em you need an ADSL2+ compatible unit, jobs oxo.

Before you do anything. Get your Eircom 2247 router and connect it to the phone socket. Connect your computer/ Laptop to the 2247 using a cable into any of the 4 ports. Open a browser and in the very top line type in 192.168.1.254 press enter, this will bring you to the settings screen for the router. This link shows how to use the settings screens http://nemont.net/DSLModem/netopia_2247nwg.php The router is setup for Eircom broadband at the moment. You need to change the username to:vodafone@vodafone.ie
    Password: broadband
    That should get you connected.

ive taken the 2247 away again as i borowed it

i think they're going back with the tp link for a DSL Router/Modem

Is their voda router working at all? Maybe the power supply has packed up. Their new router will still have to be configured to connect to the internet. The VF site give instructions on configuring various modem/routers.
