In my own bank (AIB) they charge you €10 for not having enough in your account causing a direct Debit to fail.

It's that what you're asking it varies from bank to bank.

The very same happened to me. I rang Eircom and they said "several" attempts were made in May to get their money which resulted in Eircom cancelling the dd. I had a fit on the phone tbh and I told them I'd send them my bank statements for May which would show that there was plenty of money in the account. The agent said they'd refund me the €15 charge on my next bill and the direct debit had been reinstated after I gave the details over the phone. The money for the bill would be taken on the 4th of June and guess what? Yep they didn't take. I rang again and had to pay the bill by card over the phone. God knows what the next bill will be!!

This type of "fee" is usually in respect of a dd being returned by the bank unpaid.

Disgracefully most companies do not warn customers of their liability for such fees when they are signing up for the dd scheme.

Unless you really have to you are far better off not using dds.

My dd was never returned unpaid. If the money wasn't in the bank I could understand it. I'll be gone from eircom when the contract ends.
