The other half's computer may be on the way out.

I believe the hard drive is failing or has failed.

My question really is what is the best course of action to take here?

Power Down and bring to computer repair centre (there is one in Dundalk).

I'm assuming one way or another it will have to be powered down and disk removed?

Based on that is it better to go the data recovery specialist?

I brought it to the Computer Hospital outside Newry.

The drive was corrupt and as it was Raid 0 it took down both but only one was damaged.

They ran the diagnostics on it - verified it was bunched and then ran the recovery.

Over 5TB of information was recovered from the combined 1TB drives.

Not had it back yet but collecting it tomorrow and they are confident that pictures and files are all ok which is good news.

A replacement drive is being put in as well.

Not getting overly excited until it is back and stuff is all there.

However the fee of £160 seems reasonable for the work being done.

An update for those interested :)

After filtering we collected the computer and it had nearly 1TB of files on there - unfortunately none are of any use - corrupted basically which is a disappointment.

At this stage you basically - move on - no point going down the more expensive recovery root as no guarantee of success.

Will update if we turn up something positive on the recovered data but at this stage it is doubtful. :(
