hi there, I'm looking to downgrade (engine/car size) to a 1.6 diesel as I'm doing less driving. I would like something with a bit of resale value as well.

A few choices in mind are:

    Kia Ceed 2011+
    Opel Corsa 2011+
    Ford Focus (new version) 2011/12

I've also been looking up North as it seems I could get a better deal, especially on the likes of a Focus.

Anyone got any advice? Much appreciated, as I'd like to narrow my search to just 1 car.

The bold bit is semi-important. How much driving and what type of driving do you do?

Diesels can be issue prone if used for short trips, not all will but you do increase your chances of unwanted additional costs wiping out fuel savings. Couple this with petrol models being cheaper to purchase (although worth slightly less on resale) and often the petrol can work out cheaper overall.

If I was doing small mileage and wanted a diesel for resale it would be hard to ignore the 7 year warranty on Kias. The cars are alright too. A Golf/Octavia/Leon/A3 with the 1.2 or 1.4tsi engine would be worth a look though as they are probably the best readily available petrols around in the size.

Thanks for advice. Well, typically I'd probably only do 40-50 km a week at most (mainly driving to bus stop and quick trips on the week), so I see your point about Diesel vs Petrol. the 7 Year warranty on the Kia is definitely a big selling point. Back to the drawing board!!!

What kind of terms/conditions apply to the Kia 7 year warranty? Does all service and maintenance jobs have to be carried out by a main dealer?

I've heard from a few car salesmen that it only has to be a VAT registered mechanic that does the service!

A petrol might be a better option for your type of driving.

Is the tax more on a petrol vs diesel, or is it just down to emissions?

It's down to emissions and it depends on the car but diesel is usually cheaper to tax, although the gap has closed considerably over the past few years.

There's a yearly inspection by Kia required. But the extra is a small price to pay for the warranty.

Regarding the tax there are a few petrols close enough to not matter to their diesel counterparts in terms of motor tax.

They're not exact rivals. Have you looked at Auris rivals like Kia Ceed, Hyundai i30, Seat Leon etc and Mokka rivals like the Nissan Juke?

Of those two, I'd probably have the Auris as long as its not the base one, but the Mokka is decent enough for what it is.

The Renault Captur looks a better overall package than the Mokka imo. Captur is a Nissan Juke with a prettier face.

Basic 1.2 non turbo engine on the captur is pants though. At least the juke gets a 1.6

    Not the digt turbo?

As in basically the Clio engine from 16 years ago?

Think it is the same unit from the new Qashqai.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

    That'd be a turbo so. 113bhp
    The capturs one is N/A

Edit: scrap that, they're not doing the 1.2 n/a anymore, base engine is 0.9 tce

I've always bought Toyota but himself buys Opels so I said I'd go look and the Mokka is just really nice for the money whereas I couldn't afford a Rav4 from Toyota. Thanks for yer help

The Mokka would be more of a rival for the Urban Cruiser rather than the Rav
If you like the whole jeepy thing then go for it

The Mokka isn't actually all that bad to be honest. If it's a diesel one wait for me new 1.6 to come out though. The 1.7 is past it at this stage but the new engine by all accounts is a very good unit for what it is.
