Drivetrain issue

So driving along on motorway when "drivetain" comes up on the display on 520d (2011). Display tells me to reduce speed to a moderate level and get checked out at a service. However power actually rapidly went and had to pull over. Was able to start again but only got another mile before power went again and then could not…

Car got towed eventually but haven't heard from garage where they brought it yet. Any ideas what this could be?
