Did lightning damage my router?

So on Saturday night, I was using the internet when I noticed a flash of lighting out to sea. The strike was not close but almost straight away, my internet went down.

I checked the phone line and there was a bit of noise and crackling on the line. I tried to reboot the router but to no avail. I tried again in the morning and it had started working again with no problems and the stats on my fibre line were normal.

That was until this morning when my internet went down again and has been gone since. There is some noise on the phone line but nothing crazy.

I'm on vodafone fibre broadband. The router lights up normally however the "internet" light is remaining off. The "link" light remains off mostly but every now and then flashes green. Is my router fried?

Most likely a network issue rather than your router being affected. Ring VF and see what the service status in your area is.

AFAIK link is DSL. So you arent connecting to the exchange(EDIT: By this I mean cab, as thats your exchange) as that should be on solid.

If you can hear noise its likely very bad for the sync. DSL is to Phone noise as dogs ears are to humans ears. Lots more sensitive.

Call vodafone and get them to test it.

Yeah I called VF this morning and they said there were no reported problems in my area. They also said that a technician would call out in 3-5days.

Being impatient, if I knew it was indeed my router that was damaged, I would just buy a replacement on adverts.

    Cheers for the replies.

Didnt think such a thing would be on adverts, but seems theres one.

Your line is damaged so they need to fix it either way and then see if the modem is ok.

You need to contact VF which in turn will contact Eircom wholesale who take care of the network itself.

I too am on Vodafone Fibre and I've been having significant problems today. Certain sites won't load, some struggle to load, others load just fine. And every now and then, the whole thing will cut out altogether briefly. My father said the same thing today regarding thunder and lightning in the area, so I wanted to confirm if anyone else was having these issues.

Where abouts are you? In Wicklow myself.

Still no internet for me. There is absolutely no noise or crackling on my phone line now. Have a feeling the router is fried but will wait and see.

So got sorted this morning. Engineer came out and repaired damage to the line coming from the pole outside the house. He just used a different twisted pair as there was noise in the original pair. Was impressed with how quickly the issue was dealt with by Vodafone (Eircom engineer) - less than 24 hours from when I first logged the fault.

Did you not read where I live to the left?

Still having some issues of cutting out and not loading some pages, but I don't think they're as bad as it was yesterday. Though the thunder seems to be coming this way.

Was using my phone and hence location details on the left do not show up on mobile boards.

Some years ago, I had my router fried by a direct lightning hit - dead as a dodo. It even gave a death rattle as it was being hit :D If you can borrow a router from someone (maybe even an old spare) it should be possible to establish if this is your problem.
Also, on two other occasions my line was damaged in the same way and I had to wait for Eircom to repair it (which they did within a few days, in fairness). I believe the wait was longer because I was with another ISP.
We live on top of a hill, so maybe our location leaves us susceptible to this problem?

Technician came today and fixed everything. Internet has been working without fault ever since.
