Timing of booking a weekend trip before a long haul trip?

I have flights home to Australia booked for a Tues in Dec. The flight doesn't leave until 9.30pm. I normally book flights for a Fri pm or Sat but in this case they were more expensive and I was rushing as I didn't want to loose a good deal so I just took whatever I could get.

However that now leaves me with a weekend and a Monday to kill, where I'll be twiddling my thumbs, kicking myself that I didn't pay the extra to get the Fri pm flight. So I've decided I'm going to book a long weekend away somewhere in mainland Europe. What I can't decide though is am I better to make sure I am back in Dublin on the Monday evening and have a full day in Dublin to kill, or do you think I'd be ok with a flight getting back into Dublin sometime in the afternoon on the Tuesday? It's early Dec, so I'm not too worried about the weather, but anything really could go wrong and then I'm screwed. Also would I be better avoiding Ryanair and going for someone better or with more flights just in case something does happen?

I personally wouldn't take the risk. Anything could happen to delay the flight - weather, strikes, ill passenger, plane malfunction. I couldn't deal with the stress of possibly missing my flight to Oz.

I don't think any particular airline is better than others for avoiding the above problems so you'll be fine with Ryanair.

Enjoy your day in Dublin and the Christmas lights without worrying about missing your flight.

Maybe take out a good travel insurance policy in AU before you leave so if you are delayed, you are covered?

I always take out travel insurance so that is covered. I've end up booking a flight to Cologne for the Thurs and will land in Dublin from Paris on Tues morning with Aer Lingus at 11am. There are a couple of other flights after mine from CDG to DUB that would still get me back in time for the flight to Melbourne, so if the worst happened there should be some flexiblity there.
